soooo In addition to the running I have been doing I decided I needed some strength training and instead of going it alone..I decided to take bodypump..

I have my first class today and I am terrified :cds: I have never been before, I don't know what weights to start with and I am in general afraid of looking like a total unfit idiot.

tips? help me :howdy:

:yahoo: You'll be fine! Start out with 5lbs. on each side-I am sure you can handle those. If you feel it's too light with all the reps...go up. I am up to 20 lbs (total) for warmup, but only 14 for arms. I can do 20 for biceps but only 14 for triceps.Squats & lunges: I am up to 35.

I LOVE my Body Pump class!!Tell us how you do...

Which gym are you going to? Maximum offers intro to Bodypump and Bodycombat every other Sunday I believe. This Sunday should be the second intro class (Bodycombat at 10, Pump at 11) So you can also go to that one to focus on the basics. I went to the intro to Bodycombat a couple weeks ago and the instructor was great. He went around making sure we had the correct footing so that we didn't hurt ourselves.

I've been interested in Bodypump too, so let us know how it went!

Maximum was my first choice, but I ended up going with world gym because with work in one place, monster's daycare in another, and living over the bridge..I like that I can go to any of the local ones depending on my own schedule and where I happen to be. An intro class would have been perfect, but I guess I am going to get thrown to the wolves.:cds:

ahh that's exactly the kind of thing I need to read. I have mostly done machines for weights..and I know using "real" weights is a different story.

Good Choice.

I've told every member trying the class for the first time to let the instructor know it's new to them and the instructors are pretty good about keeping a closer eye on the new people to help them out.

:yeahthat: Tell them!! They will pull you kind of to the side, help you out get you set up. And watch to make sure you aren't killing yourself.

And start with light weights. You may feel silly, but you need to learn form first. Worry about weight later. You will feel it all tomorrow, best hurt EVER

Yeah, and the chick at the front desk was super cute, so somehow I think that makes it a good choice too.:killingme

Body Pump was my most favorite thing to do in the world ever back in the day. :yahoo:

It is all about stamina and the reps... your goal is to last the entire song working that specific muscle set so I highly recommend you start with light weights. I remember when I convinced Tater (who was a die-hard weightlifter) to come to one of the classes and he could not make it through the songs even though had he gone out to the floor he could have benched 5 times the amount of weights he had during class.

To this day I get an adrenaline rush when I hear one of the songs that were part of a body pump class routine.... *jealous!!!!*

I read "Bodypump" and the first thing that came to mind was a giant vacuum cylinder with a tube and a "bulb" at the end.
Get inside the tube. Have someone on the outside squeeze the bulb and you "magically" get taller. :killingme

I used to take BP all the time at Maximum. Is that still where you go?

It's a piece of cake. In fact, once you start lifting weights on a regular basis you'll want nothing to do with BP anymore.

I did both, but I got such a rush from BP it was the highlight of my week. As with everything... different strokes for different folks. She'll either love it or leave it.... Tater left it...

True, I just didn't care for it once I got into weights hardcore. Individual weight lifting did sooooo much more for me than BP ever did.

Good ole Tater... I miss his humor on here.

World gym. In college I used machines primarily, and saw almost no results, except with leg machines, likely because that's where my high weights were. I figured the BP class would be a good way to get some instruction and figure out what the heck I'm doing.

If the instructor is good, you'll be schooled on proper form throughout the entire class.

I rarely use machines... mostly just free weights and I combine that with cardio classes.
