Books for 12 year olds

watercolor

yeah yeah
Books are awesome gifts as christmas presents, and it works even better that one of the girls I nanny for loves to dive into a good book. To the point in maybe a couple of days- she is done. For christmas I want to get her something to read that would be good. She likes fiction, things such as harry potter- and she just got done reading one called Shakespears Secret. Just wondering what was popular or a good read for 12 year olds these days.

She might like the Sisters Grimm series or any of the American Girl History Mysteries.

Little Women is a good old standard. So are any of the Anne of Green Gables series.

Some 12 year olds can tackle Tolkein- Hobbit is about a 7th/8th grade book.

A friend of mine got my daughter the complete Little Women set when she was 9 or 10 and she absolutely loved them - has the books to this day.

I gave Larry's oldest a copy of Gone With the Wind when she was 12 or so, and it's still one of her favorite books.

As you can see, I lean toward the classics.

Has she read the Lemony Snicket series? They're great...sort of fantastical, very silly and wonderfully written. They're not quite as daunting as Harry Potter in that they aren't as long, but the vocabulary and writing style is just superb. I absolute love Lemony Snicket, and I'm a picky reader.

"The Key to Chintak, The Zamorian Chronicals" by John Howard

There can't be many twelve-year-old girls who can read from the blank pages of an ancient black book. A book that, since it was discovered buried by the sands of time in the Egyptian desert, has baffled archaeologists and scientists alike.

But then Millie is no ordinary twelve-year-old girl and what she unearths buried in the pages of the two-thousand-year-old book leads her and her grandad on an adventure of true self discovery and wonder. A journey like none other ever undertaken - where they encounter most powerful and deadly forces with nothing more than courage and cunning - that is until the book helps Millie in a way she could never have imagined.

Follow them on their quest as they battle their way around the globe in an attempt to solve the mysteries behind some of the ancient wonders of the world in search of their ultimate goal - The Key to Chintak.

Is she getting too old for Babysitter's Club? There had to be at least 400 books in that series.....

I remember taking books out of my older sisters collection when I was younger. The Little House on the Prairie Book Collection was good reading.

The Witch of Blackbird Pond, by Elizabeth George Speare, was one of my favorite books when I was in 7th grade.

Apparently she is. Her 10 year old sister reads those- but she is "too old for that stuff":lmao:

My 12 year old can't get enough of Tamora Pierce... She has several book series you can chose from. My daughter has enjoyed them all. Her books are all centered around strong, adventerous, young female characters.

I used to read Sweet valley twins and Sweet valley high books. They were similar to babysittersclub. the high school ones were a little older.

Yeah, I remembered reading them when I was 10, but I can't remember when I outgrew them.

How about VC Andrews? :jet:

I'm just kidding by the way....she should be way older so she can deal with the effed up stories!

Search for an abridged version of the hobbit and/or Lord of the Rings. While the Hobbit might be a good choice, LotR started getting into Tolkien's lore very heavily, and you really don't need 15 lines of, "Jack was the son of Elrondii, the high councilman of the Elven Guards which watched over the fall of Rohanna which was led by......" when "Jack" could do just as well.

Other good options...The Shannara books, The Lion, the witch, and the wardrobe(and the others), Lemony Snicket, Golden Compass, etc.

Hell, find a childrens movie now a days, and I bet there is a book its based off.

I'm not a girl, but my favorite book when I was 12 was 'My Side of the Mountain' .... a very good book about a kid who runs away to live off the land just to know he could do it.

It's by Jean Craighead George and it won some award too.

My daughter is loving the "Nancy Drew" books. I think it's so funny because she thinks they are new!
Also, they have Hannah Montana books out now and the girls love them!
