Books for my 7 year old son

Has anyone found books that may get my 7 year old interested in reading? He has to read each night for school, and it is like pulling teeth. I would love to find a "real book" as opposed to short story books that I have been getting him to read. Something that will interest him that he could read a chapter each night. Not having a lot of luck for books that can hold his interest and not contain too many words or concepts that he doesn't understand. Thanks for any suggestions.:howdy:

Try this. Great Early Elementary Reads book list | Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC)

Many of them should be available in your son's school library or in your local library.

You are going to have to find something that interest him.....he likes cars, get him a books about old hot rods/new sport cars....he likes majic, get him a books about majic tricks

Coming from someone that has raised 4 boys, they read at their own pace/own time and you have to figure out what will motivate them to read....and no 2 children enjoy the same types of books

I think it was the Captain Underpants series my nephew was really big into at that age.

Most boys that age are more into reading nonfiction than fiction -- dinsoaurs, cars, sports, how to draw, anything gross (lots of cool books out there for kids that are like this!).

Those that are reading fiction tend to go for the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, Captain Underpants series, Goosebumps series (or any other scary book). You can also try Magic Schoolbus and Arthur chapter books as they are familiar characters from picture books, just expanded stories in chapter book format. I've even had boys read some of the Junie B. Jones series books (some of them are absolutely hysterical!).

As someone else said, find out what he's interested in and go for that area first. It's not so important what he's reading, as it is that he's reading! As always, take a peek at the book first to see if you think he can read it and it's appropriate for him in your eyes as you are the one who knows your child and his abilities the best.

To check for readability, you can use the 5 finger method. Have him read the first paragraph. For each unfamiliar word that he doesn't know, put up a finger. If you get to 5 before the end of the paragraph, find another book that's a bit easier.

And, finally, don't stop reading aloud to him. Kids love to be read to, (even the 6th graders) and it is a wonderful way to share time with your child and build their vocabularies.

Good luck & have fun!!

My 7 year old loves the Diary of Wimpy Kid books.

My son also liked these books and owns all of them....HOWEVER. I think the stories and overall message's in the book are for older kids! It was around 5th grade when my son started doing some dumb silly things come to find out he had read it in the book and decided to try some of the things.
