Back when we lived in Waldorf, our house was broken into. House was only empty for about an hour three days a week - between the time I left for work and the time my son got home from school. Small stereo, playstation, xbox, games, dvd player and some movies were taken - basically all the gadgets that a teen and preteen boy would have in their room. The thief missed the brand new computer, a $400 bose radio, 2 expensive tvs, jewelry - you know, the sort of things thieves usually take. We had a dog that barked at everything, but my kids' friends knew she was a big baby. Nice set of sneaker prints where the guy jumped the fence and dropped a couple of cd's.
My son knew who did it, because only one kid in the neighborhood wasn't at school that day. Police went to his house to ask questions (the kid kept calling asking if the cops had come and what were they doing, etc) but his father would not let them in to question the boy. The real telling was a few weeks later when the boy mentioned in passing that "everything will be covered by insurance".
It took a lot of explaining to get our son to understand why the boy was no longer welcome in our house and why he was not allowed to hang out with him anymore. I don't think that boy's father did him any favors, either. He still isn't much good ten years later.
