BREAKING NEWS: John Couey sentenced to death

MIAMI - A jury on Wednesday recommended that a convicted sex offender get the death penalty for the kidnapping, rape and murder of 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford, who was buried alive in trash bags just yards from her home.

The jury, on a 10-2 vote, brushed aside pleas for mercy and a life sentence from defense lawyers based on claims that John Evander Couey, 48, is mentally retarded and suffers from chronic mental illness. Jurors, the same ones who convicted him last week, deliberated for about one hour.

The final decision on Couey’s fate will be made in several weeks by Circuit Judge Richard Howard, who is not bound by the jury’s recommendation but is required to give it “great weight.”

This entire case is a prime example of how these types of offenses escalate in time and how a true sex offender will never, ever change.

3rd grade? Think of your 3rd grader being raped and murdered?

I'd have to kill him with my bare hands. I just don't understand how anyone could justify a life sentence for somebody like this. *shakeshead*

I agree..I don't wish anyone a shortened life..but there are exceptions, and he is it. I still can not begin to imagine anyone doing what he did to a 3rd grader, an 8 year old!
And to think if he is given the death penality, he will spend a least that long in appealing the sentance, and he will be given every benefit that the courts can give him.

WE can learn something from Iraq here. In Iraq rhe death penalty has to be carried out 30 days after an appeal.

This guy has at least another 14 years to live and the state will spend millions in lawyers fees fighting the appeals that will be filed.

Unfortunately, he'll live longer and better on death row than if he got life. If he went to GP, he'd het the old Dahmer treatment by the end of the year.

Forutnately, this is in a state that will probably get around to offing him before Jessica's 18th birthday. Good thing it isn't the Maryland Soviet Socialist Republic, where it is considered more cruel to give a lethal injection than it is to murder someone in cold blood.

How about locking him in the center chamber of that Nuculer Reactor in Russia that went bad several years ago? Area is to HOT for life..and if you stay there you slowly die from radiation poisoning.
Lock him in, give him some expired MRE's and toss the key away.....
