I wonder how Geek would suggest we keep gunmen out of our MOST secure facilities.

Why would you want me to give you a suggestion? You do not know them personally, therefore they do not exist. Their pain is irrelevant. Nothing has happened tonight as far as you are concerned.

The point is if you can't keep a determined gunman out of a VERY secure facility how do you expect to do it in a school?

You can buy seconds even minutes that might save lives. If you have security cameras It may be possible to notify first responders faster. Because a gunman unleashes in a school does not mean you throw up your hands and say "oh well". You try and evolve with whatever danger is presented to you.

HOUSTON, Texas (CNN) -- Police said Saturday that a bad performance review may have led a NASA contractor to fatally shoot his supervisor and take another employee hostage before killing himself.

Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt said Saturday an e-mail critical of an employee's work set Friday's events in motion at Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The gunman, a career NASA civil servant identified as Bill Phillips, received an e-mail from NASA employee and supervisor David Beverly last month. The e-mail detailed Phillips' "job deficiencies" and outlined a plan for improvement

CNN is describing this guy as a contractor and civil servant. Anyone hear which is correct?

Aren't they the same? People that work for Dyncorp and such are considered both, right?

No. You have contractors who are employees of their respective companies (BAE, Dyncorp, EMA, etc) then you have civil servants who are employed by the federal govt.

Or you arm yourself, so you can take personal responsibility to defend yourself.

Carry an unregistered weapon onto a federal facility and let them find out. You'd be buried under the federal prison.

At one point they were searching the trunks of cars here at work. Rent-a-cops hired by the GSA that is. Only problem is that they have no authority over the parking garages. They are county owned public garages or they are owned by the property owner (depends on which garage). Either way, a co-worker said "No, you aren't searching my car" a couple years ago and they "detained him" for a bit and then sent him on to work, only to have building security visit him and his boss later on. They were put in their place by management and the union who explained the facts of life to them. That put an end to vehicle searches. Funny part is that while this was going on, it was deer season. I had my rifle (hunted on the eastern shore at the time, used a 30-06) in the trunk, under a pile of camo clothes and camo duffle bags. They never saw the gun. Co-worker did not have a gun in the car, he just didn't feel like being searched because he had to get out to unlock the trunk (interior release was broken).

Employees at most facilities are not searched going into or out of facilities. Just visitors.

but at DOD and certain federally protected sites (nuke plants come to mind) you give the OK to being searched just by entering. They may not, but they have the right to search employees if they choose, on site that is.....

Right. They can search us going into the buildings, just not the parking garages. I could go on and on with the lack of security here.

are the garages on site, in side the fence? If so i dont see how they can make a distinction.
