.... good for him... and the rest of the story is that he had gone AWOL when he got picked up and had promised to dis the U.S. for good in trade for his life.

I heard he was AWOL, but never heard that he betrayed the U.S. Got any links?

Did you read the article you posted?
The group -- which calls itself "Islamic Response," the security wing of the Islamic Resistance of Iraq -- faxed a statement to the network, saying Hassoun "has been sent to a safe place after he had announced his forgiveness and his determination not to go back to the U.S. forces

I didn't use the word "betrayed" which to me would imply something such as "detailing military secrets"...
Ask his squadmates (or whatever the term is in the Army) if they feel betrayed by him. Bet they do.

I would be willing to bet they are happier than hell he is gone.

even if he did head "home" he'll be picked up and back on the line in no time...at least after questioning....

Who's to say he hasn't shared military secrets??? I guess we'll find out what actually happened in the upcoming days - or not.

It's my understanding that his true "homeland" is Lebanon... he had only been in the U.S. for a few years.

that's what i meant too... he'll be back home in lebanon, then he'll get picked up and sent back to the line after questioning.

I agree... but I am basing my current opinion on the current facts being reported. I change my opinion accordingly... look at how fast my opinion of Otter has changed today...

:lmao: Poor Otter.

At any rate, I hope these reports aren't true.

I'm glad he wasn't killed. However for the life of me, I can't figure out why SOME people join the military. When I was in the military (Marines) I knew exactly what I was getting myself into. I guess it was a bit easier for me because my father is retired military and have a long family history in the military. I guess my point is (if I even have one) I think maybe the military needs to be a bit more picky and not just enlist anyone that says they want to join. What really ticks me off is that the U.S. took care of this Marine (i.e. food, housing, clothing, insurance) and he turned around and stabbed the U.S. in the back.

I haven't really read the story completely about what is going on, I can only hope that this is not all true. If he did go AWOL I hope the Army/Government punishes him just like they would have done to anyother soldier/sailor.

As I understand it from talking to a Marine Major, when under deress it is the Marines objective to stay alive. As long as he isn't giving up secrets (of which they usually aren't privy to at that rank), they are allowed to say what they need to in order to stay alive. He says they view the life as more important than the action at that point. He also says all those other cards will be dealt with later (whether he really was AWOL and weather he will/will not return), but the important thing is that he is alive.

:yeahthat:

It's not the least bit uncommon. Peeps go AWOL and UA all the time and end up with reduction in rank and half month's pay for 3 month and then get kicked out.

The important thing is that he might possibly still be alive. Who cares what he said (excluding knowledge that would be considered sensitive) or the news media "says" in order to do that.
