Breed Recommendations

SOMD POM MOM
I don’t know if I will go down this path or not, but I noticed yesterday a turkey vulture that should only want dead things started to go for one of my poms. They do on occasion visit the fenced back yard without us and I would hate to think something would happen to them. So if I see it again I will most likely be looking for a larger dog to help protect my kids. They are all small poms about 5lbs each, does anyone have a recommendation on a good breed for this? I don’t want anything really big and I was thinking a herding breed would be best. Anyone have a suggestion incase I need to explore the option further? If you have one please let me why you think they would be a good choice against the birds and other things that may like to have a pom and why you think they will no bother the poms? Also what kind of training if any would you recommend? My firs thought was Sheltie...but...I would like other opinions too.

I would think any larger dog would work as a deterrent. Do you really want to live with a herding breed that has non-stop energy just for an occasional guard?

Well I want them to understand a job and not be at all agressive. I am open to all ideas. But if you have been around a group of poms you may see the need for a herder. Just 5 can keep me hoping. Only thing I am fairly sure I don't want is a sight hound.

They call me ... Sarcasmo
We had a mixed breed rescue that could catch birds mid air, so no need to get a "particular" breed.

I sure wouldn't mind a rescue that would do what I am looking for. Sometimes I wish I didn't move a pitlab to second hope, but it was for his own good. He wasn't happy with just poms. Plus I think a little smaller then Bella is all we would need. A Mastiff with Hair Balls from poms and persians could be messy....Maybe KOM wants to come off the golf course and clean. :p

Well I'll weigh in... I have an Australian shepherd, a large-breed herding dog.

First off, he is the smartest animal I have every been around. As far as brains go, the breed is right up there with the Boarder Collies, etc. Trainability is top-notch. Mine understood "sit" and "lay down" by 10 weeks.

Now I cant vouch for the breed as a whole, but my Aussie is VERY well-mannered. Never gets in the trash. Never jumps on counters. Never eats people food unless its handed to him. Wont get in his own dog food unless its put in his bowl, etc.

He is very protective of "his" people, home, and "siblings" (another dog and a cat). He is not dangerous to others but he definately meets strangers at the door with a great BIG bark. I can take him away from the house and "out of his element," so to speak, to the boardwalk or fair or horse shows or dogpark and he does just fine - no agression toward people or other dogs, horses, cats, etc. But I honestly feel if someone were to attack me, he'd be on their azz.

He is very gentle with smaller dogs, puppies, cats, kids, horses, etc. The breed typically dosnt play really rough so your little guys should be safe :yay: I also think an Aussie would be good for you for fending off the buzzards because are ARE big (up to 65 lbs) and will investigate anything "forgein" that comes into their yard. But at the same time, a 65lb dog isnt too big.

Keep in mind that they are herding animals - if something runs, they're most likely going to chase it... But like i said before they are very well behaved and easily trained so if you teach and enforce the "HALT" and "come" commands, you're good to go! :yay:

There are two types of Aussie breeders. There are "working" breeders and "show" breeders. The dogs that come from a working breeder have the herding instincts, the smarts, etc., but may not have a "show quality" coat. The dogs that come from the show breeders dont have such intense herding instincts, may be a little more silly and un-focused, etc., but have the looks. For what you want, I'd go with a working breeder's puppy.

If you want more info and/or have any more questions, please feel free to ask. I absolutely love my Aussie!

you can not shoot a bird of prey....and they only eat dead things...so as long as the poms are alive you should be ok. There are mini aussies that would be big enough to bark and chase off the birds but small enough to do well with the poms.they run 15-20lbs and 14-17" tall

You might try a Puli. My parents have one he is very gentle with little dogs, cats, and kids. He will chase off any bird or critter that doesn't "belong" on their property. Another plus is that he has hair not fur. Low shed!! He only weighs about 30 lbs as well. Very smart and food motivated. I don't know if you have ever seen a puli. They come in two colors black, or white and they have dread locks. If you don't want the dreads you can just get him a haircut. Good luck on your dog hunt!

I googled. I had never heard of these breeds before. The Kerelian was very cute and large. The Ovcharka was scary big!!

The picture is of an Ovcharka.

I was also under this impression until I fellow pom person saw one attack a live bunny. Anything hungry enough will try it. I don't think it would be very successful in a meal, but I don't want the injury vet bill either. ER vet or feeding and caring for a medium sized dog is cheaper.

Yes, I also thought shotgun etc...but I can't do that...I am one of those people that brings things home and helps them and finds them new homes. Not much of a killer. Plus I can't hit the broad side of a barn so I am safer not going that route for a number of reasons. =)
