Breed Recommendations

Thanks Turbo....I am not stuck on a breed so I was willing to listen to others. Of course there babies are the best, except for mine. Things I would be doing for sure would be SOCIALIZATION to the max. Then work on the basics for training. I am not a BIG dog person which is why I have poms. Most I have known are under socialized and don't have basic manners IE get out of the way. I can live with a BIG dog if they are trained, but they aren't spoiled brats like the poms. I should NOT allow them to get away with things either, but the melt me. My poms could use some :whip: now and then. I guess my next show I will spend the day looking and talking to breeders. Maybe just maybe if needed we will have a fun loving larger dog in our future. Hey maybe the hubby can pick this time.....:twitch:

All I know is I could tout the benefits of the Dobermann all day, but they work for me because they fit my personality, my style. My wife calls me the Dobe whisperer . I haven't met a person yet that can do with them what I can :toothorn: and I've been around a lot of Dobe people...

But I'm just average with other doggies.

I trained a few dogs for a breeder friend a few years back, for instance. She was an accomplished handler. But she couldn't get them to perform like they did for me. Give her a GSD and lookout. I remember the first time she trialed Eric (the same eric as in the one vid) and he blew it for her.. kept wandering off to eat the 'bait' hotdogs off the ground, or standing around looking at the spectators (she swears he was looking for me ). He never did that crap with me, from day one that dog was staring at me looking for direction. :yay:

Point is, a perfect dog for me, or Inmarsh, or anyone could very well be a crap dog for you. Your personality, your tone, how you communicate with your voice and body, has to mesh with the dog. That's your doggy style . Each breed does have it's tendencies, but if those don't mesh with you, it doesn't matter how they mesh with your 'advisers'.

Another breeder of Aussies is in Calvert Co.,.. Willow Creek Farm..good peeps.

Oh I didn’t know there was an Aussie breeder in Calvert! Oh I must find them! :buddies:

Australian shepherd and not Aus cattle dogs? :yay: The cattle dog is very very territorial as a general rule, and they are the #1 dog for 'bad' bites in Australia, despite being outnumbered by many other breeds. Great for running off turkey vultures, not so great for guests and meter readers.

I just read an article in USA today by a dog training 'expert' who went on a rant about how we don't need 'aggressive' and 'vicious' dogs bred to guard and protect any more. Thought it was ironic that her pic had her with her Aus cattle dog in her lap. I guess anyone can proclaim themselves an expert in anything they want these days... Seemed a bit Al Gorish.

So yeah :offtopic: but :1bdz: it tickled me.

Ha, that’s funny. I like Australian Cattle Dogs (aka Blue Heelers). I think they’re cool dogs, but I know they tend to be a bit aggressive. Didn’t know it was that bad, though.

Musta been thinking about you, dear.

:roflmao:

:killingme Musta been...

I don’t know if I will go down this path or not, but I noticed yesterday a turkey vulture that should only want dead things started to go for one of my poms. They do on occasion visit the fenced back yard without us and I would hate to think something would happen to them. So if I see it again I will most likely be looking for a larger dog to help protect my kids. They are all small poms about 5lbs each, does anyone have a recommendation on a good breed for this? I don’t want anything really big and I was thinking a herding breed would be best. Anyone have a suggestion incase I need to explore the option further? If you have one please let me why you think they would be a good choice against the birds and other things that may like to have a pom and why you think they will no bother the poms? Also what kind of training if any would you recommend? My firs thought was Sheltie...but...I would like other opinions too.

Yes, everyone has their own breed, which it the 'BESTEST" :)... I have boxers, who play well, and very gentle with my mothers pom... as does my sisters dogs..which are Aussies, Catahoulas, AND Border Collies... only difference is the preference... I love my boxers and their personality... and I get those nasty turkey buzzards too in my backyard...YUCK...I recommend of course a boxer, not a herding dog...personal preference only. They are the clowns of the dog world and I would not have anything else... Like I said, everyone thinks they have the best :) !! But, you can't go wrong w/ a boxer (just sayin )

You may consider a Corgi as well. Small, compact, but a ton of fun, and could easily get done what you're wanting.

Corgi's are wonderful! My sister in Delaware breeds Pembroke Welsh Corgi's and she has 4 small children. The corgi's are so sweet and smart and great with the kids. Good suggestion! She has puppies right now too, I think

Or Dobermanns!! Mine are sweet and smart and good with kids, AND will eat a burglar kicking in your door. BONUS!! And as long as they are around little dogs from day 1, they'll be great with 'em. :yay:

Or Giant Schnauzers! I have friends that have them and they are sweet and smart and good with kids. :yay:

How about an Airedale? Or a Pointer? Or a Whippet? Or a Deerhound? Or a Manchester Terrier?

:roflmao:

Sorry. I just get :cds: when I see "she has puppies" because it comes across as marketing. :lmao: Besides, you just potentially described almost every breed of dog on the face of the earth. :yay:

:killingme You're a nut. Sounds like my Aussie and your Dobe have similiar characteristics :lmao:

LOVE Giant Schnauzers and airedales! They're so cool. Pointers are sooo smart. Whippets drive me crazy; bleh. I prefer Irish Wolfhounds to Scottish Deerhounds, personally. If Im going to get an "ugly" dog, it might as well be a BIG "ugly" dog :lmao:

Definately not marketing. And sort of offended.
I, personally, only described my dog, DDB and the corgi's. I do not see a problem with that. Someone else suggested a Corgi, and I just agreed.
Bottom line, everyone loves their dog and that is a great thing!

Offended? By what? Speaking my mind? On a public forum? :cds:

Don't feel bad. I offend lots of people. :yay: At least you don't have to share living space with me! :roflmao:
