Man, it really IS Brrr out there! Went out to trim the weeds and onion grass, ran right back in and got a better jacket and gloves! It's the wind...

Gotta leave the house soon to go stir apple butter all morning.
Two hours into the cooking process. Chunky apple sauce.

Finally, eight hours later. Ready to jar.

I like that you're doing the "traditional" way on an open fire.
That is one reason this (last) kettle took so long. They scorched a batch the week before after getting the fire too close to the kettle so they were leery of getting the fires too hot this week. Unfortunately we were having difficulty bringing this kettle back to a boil after adding the sugar. After almost a hour, they decided to pile the wood to it and close down the wind screens. Once the kettle began boiling, they removed the screens and pulled most of the fire out.

Went to the Apple Blossom Festival up there a few times back in the 70s, exes parents had a cabin outside Winchester. Was a big deal back then.

wow .since 1924

"The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival is a 10-day celebration that includes a carnival, parades, concerts, dances, a wine festival, and more. The festival is known for its pink and green decor and the coronation of "Queen Shenandoah". The first festival was held in 1924 as a one-day event, but has grown into a two-week celebration.

The festival was suspended for three years during World War II."

One of the things I miss about living more northeast was being able to shoot up to VT and NH for apples in the early fall. The smell when you walk into an apple barn is something your remember forever.

The church normally gets their apples from an orchard on Romney, WV. This year the orchard couldn't fill the order. Fortunately for the church, because they have been a customer for so long, the owner found apples somewhere else to fill their order.
