Lilly on 3:05 pm on Mar. 20, 2002[br]What the one with the porno shop in the back?  I bet they will be missed!

I believe he is talking about Bowes Books, across from Aldridge Ford, which has been around as long as I can remember.  The one with the porno shop will be around FOREVER....

I agree with vrailblonde. Its up to the county commissioners to regulate who builds what. however, the reason we have so many empty stores is because of the money hungry owners who charge too much rent. If they would only lower their rent, they would find that they would actually make money.

Yes from what I understand, Bowes will be closing. Another small business that has been chewed up by the "Big Box" stores. It is so sad to see these businesses close because of the greed of Wal Mart and other like that. Soon it will be only Wal Mart, Target and oh yea Sams Club left to shop at. I wonder if prices will stay that low then?

Now Vicos, as some one said in this form, "Mom and Pop stores should find their niche and run with it"(or something like that). Anyway, the Bowes store did just that just like the Elephants Trunk did. It's is just sad to see these businesses go away after people have tried so hard to make them go. If they didn't live up to your standards,,,,, well you won't have to worry about that much longer.

Jeez, I probably shouldn't get started on Walmart but, TOO LATE!  It's not just about low prices it's also about quality.  When old man Walton was alive and Wally World's were new, most everything they sold had the "Made in USA" label on it.  There was even a big banner stating the "Made in USA" pride hanging in the entryway.  Prices are dropping but so is the quality.  Before they remodeled in St. Mary's they used to carry genuine "bore snakes" and "gun scrubber".  Now they have cheapie bore snakes made in China.  Lucky me can still get "gun scrubber" in Prince Fred. but for how long?  I can get these things elsewhere but it was convenient just to pick them up when I shop for soap and paper products.  They also raised their prices on other things after the remodel.

UGH on the builders too.  Most of the trees in my yard have died due to the builder running into the bark with the backhoe and it not healing correctly and also burying the crown of the trees up to a few feet.  IDIOTS!  I've had to pay $$$ to have a few of them removed and one even fell on my neighbors house, oops.

The Elephants Trunk was a fun place to browse and get a special gift.  You can't find that stuff in WW or Target.

Lets face it...No Growth is a difficult task...but it is possible and it has wonderful benefits!
1) Waterford Virginia: The whole town has qualified for a National Landmark because it has frozen growth: Result? Quaint roads, neighborly cooperation, farms, and 50,000 people visit it at $12.00/head every October for their market days....that pays to preserve even more land and maintain its rural atmosphere.

2) St Michael's Maryland; Carefully maintained small town atmosphere: No chain stores, fast food...just antiques, boutiques, and wonderful Victorian architecture...peaceful, pleasant, and certainly worth spending a couple hundred on (we just did last weekend!)

Solomon's had a chance to do the same thing but under the greedy eye of Louis Goldstein, they started tearing down their victorians and building plaza's-now, it is ruined forever.

The list goes of successes goes on: Quaint, preserved, rural really does pay off.
But no, we have commisioners and zoning board idiots that think that the best way to raise $$$ is to build everywhere. Guess what: They will still ccreate a debt and try to build their way out of it.
When a family is having a hard time meeting the bills...do you plan on adopting twins? NO! You stop growth and manage your budget!
Why can't our leaders figure out this simple principle?

Hessian,
I'm glad you know what we all want.  Just because you want it doesn't mean we all want it.  I like the conveniences because I grew up here and know what it's like to hang out in the square with nothing to do as a teenager.  I know how much of a pain it is to have to go to Waldorf for Christmas shopping or any other kind of shopping.  NOT any more I hardly leave the county because everything I want is right here, and this is where I'm happy.   What I want more than anything is it to be fair for the rights of landowners.    It's quiet arrogant to come here and then stop others from coming in, put yourself on the outside.  The developers don't have the "build it and they will come" attitude.  The developers doors are being pounded on and money being waved in the face by the Hoyer transplants and the economy benefactors for bigger and better housing.  I myself and family will be outgrowing our house and we are making plans now for a move.   Empty Stores is just the landlords battling it out amongst themselves.  All of which is driven by Market and Location, Location, Location.  Probably the same consideration you used to find your place of residents.  Did you turn down some house because you did not like the  location, yet you want to deny that consideration to an individual who wants to create jobs and help the community?  Some people have successfully created an “US vs. THEM” against business, the same businesses that a lot of those people work for and depend on for their income.  Talk about a knife in the back!  Do you think the people needing jobs and are working a Target and Giant are wishing First Colony didn’t happen?  I personally would be offended if a person wished failure on my company.  They are indirectly wishing failure on me too.   Most of our companies that we depend on for jobs are growing.  I would be uneasy if I did not see my company growing.  These small little mom and pop towns are quite fun to visit but you never mentioned that you were willing to stay, why is that?  They look pretty cool on TV but you have no idea of there economic troubles.  Could it be that the highest paying job is $12/hour?  They are the carpet for the tourists to rub their feet on and leave  while tourists spend their dough people work for minimum wage.  What happens when no one goes on vacation?  Cities around the globe are hurting in the tourist area.  How much revenue are these towns collecting on land that is worthless because of low-density laws, not much I bet.  They have to charge an entry few to compensate the revenue.  95% of America is NOT developed so preserving land around here will only push the people deeper into the forest.  Isn't that just the opposite of the tree huggers agenda?  Or is it to stop growth whenever, wherever it is, no matter what?  If it's the latter then start at home in controlling growth and sterilize your self.

Being new to the area, we are considering building in Mariner's Cove, out behind Cedar Cove.  Any comments regarding that area or the builder, Curtis Homes?

I agree with you but I think you're misplacing the blame.  It's the responsibility of our county commissioners to limit or regulate the development of the county.  Developers can't just buy a spot of land and start putting up houses and strip malls - they must have permission first.

Hopefully you all will remember this when you fill out your ballot in November.

I agree, too many people speak out but unless a few 'good' commissioners read these forum announcements, nothing is being done. More emails, letters and phone calls to the commissioners' offices would help.

There is where a thread like this should be sewn.

Just a note to add. I am very pleased with living in Charles County. We have had much success in community planning from our commissioners over the years. I wouldnt want to live anywhere else.

Look at St. Charles. It has been evolving for 35 years. Now, look at Fairfax or Loudoun County in VA. Just take a ride out that way if you want to see an example of nightmarish growth. There are communities that have been built there in the last 5 years or so that dwarf our community. No planning whatsoever. Just deep pockets paving the way.
