Bulimic puppy???

hmmmmmm
My puppy is a little piggy, too concerned with finishing fast in hopes he can beat his big sister and eat her's too. He woofs down his food and pukes it up 30 seconds later. The only thing to stop him really is to feed it to him out of my hand a little at a time.... really is this what I'm going to have to do???

Any better solution?

Get a realllly big bowl..so that he has to chase the food around! My dog does this, to this day..she doesnt puke but she makes asthma attack noises and struggles to breathe..we dont have any other dogs..she wolfs simply because she can..when she was younger we fed her smaller amounts more times a day but it became so cumbersome...maybe one of those automatic feeders..they only put a little food in the bowl part at a time...that should slow him down..without you having to feed him kibble by kibble...

put it in a plastic ball, cut some hole sout of the ball, so he will have to roll it around to get the food out, he wont be able to gobble it all up at once- get one of those hamster balls and puncture some holes in it :yay:

Those are great suggestions BUT I have 2, the puppy and his big sister and they are eating different food, one for puppy and one for adult. Plus with a little piggy on my hands an automatic feeder might not be a great idea.

No auto feeder.

I have a "gobbler." I think it comes from him being in a puppy mill and having to fight for his food. KVJ has the right idea. I use a large marrow bone and put it in Buster's bowl. He has to eat around the bone and it slows him down...some...but it does help. You can also use a large rock or anything that he has to "work" around.

get a no-tip metal dog bowl and flip it over... he'll have to work to eat and it should slow him down...

bowl like this Stainless Steel Dog Bowl No-Tip Food & Water Bowls - 32 oz.. List: $7.95, $7.95.

I thought I saw bowls specifically made for this problem once. I remember they had like posts sticking up in the bowl, 4 I think, and they had to work around the posts to get the food and it would stop the woofing all together eventually.

:yeahthat: I had to do that with my cat until he learned to eat slower. I used a golf ball for him, but I wouldn't suggest that for the pup. And teach him to leave big sister's food alone.

If you only put the correct amount of food in the feeder..shouldnt be too bad especially if you get a smaller one designed for cats or smaller dogs (no idea how big puppy is :) then it will still dispense slowly...

I was looking for that, TY :yay:
If the upside down bowl doesn't work I'll have to try this.

If you have to use an auto feeder (how do you keep the dogs from eating each others feed??) use a large rock that won't get covered by the food as it tumbles out. This slows them down. A large marrow bone will probably be removed and chewed on.

The sneezy/gagging sounds and yakking up the meal are probably backwards sneezes caused by eating too fast: Reverse sneezing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and the rock will stop the behavior. If you switch to using a bowl, you can use a large link chain dog collar in the bowl.

It would become a search and rescue ops at my house.
I'd seriously worry about life and limb (both mine and the pups) should i be required to rescue it to place back in the puppy's bowl.

although i did once have a dog who pushed a big rock around with his nose all day long...so...that may become an issue too. :drama:

I'd stay with the metal bowls. That one shown in the video is plastic.
why metal? the metal ones make black stains on our bullie's fat white jowls. they clank around in the crate too. makes an awful ruckus (in addition to all the schlurping and glurping already going on).

Cats can't have plastic bowls so I've always bought metal for everyone, easier to clean, don't get stained. My dogs don't eat in crates so no clanking. I buy the ones with rubber on the bottom anyway. My dogs know their spots to eat and there are no issues.

Clippers Canine Cafe carries a few bowls that have "knobs" at the bottom of the bowl that they have to work around.

My friend uses these bowls for her dogs and they have worked wonders for her fast eaters!!
