Sure it wasn't a glimpse of a smallish groundhog? We see them in trees where I work fairly often. Trees with some "lean" to them, not straight ones.
They don't really hop though, more like a realy fast waddle.

Set your camera out & try to snap a pic.Saw him again this morning and watched him for a bit. Still can't determine what he is other than a sqwabbit. I tried to get a better look at his hind legs but couldn't get close enough - although he definitely hopped away, not leaping like squirrels do.
