Qualifier: "Knowingly". If the illegal presents papers that appear legit, he might "might" be off the hook. If he fails to follow up or knows the documents are fake, or doesn't care, then yes.

A construction company in my hometown of 8k people was found to hire/harbor illegal aliens. You can't seem to have a roof installed these days by a crew that doesn't at least raise an eyebrow concerning their immigration status.

Well that is a FEDERAL Crime ....

1. No or False SSN
2. Tax Fraud / Evasion

Supposed to be E-Verifying

Seems to me that E-Verify or something like it has been around since the 70s. B-I-L had a plumbing company(approx. 300 employees) back then and he used it constantly because the fines were crazy if they found you hired an illegal.

When was the last time anyone was actually punished for it?

It wouldn't make hiring them so attractive if it happened much.
wasn't it about 4-5 years ago big chicken processing plant in Kansas (maybe) was fined big time when it was exposed hiring 100's of illegals...

Not sure what state...

False SSN? Where do you think the 130 year olds were working.
False SSN's... for sure. It seems that every time a politician or MSM talking heads speaks about how the illegals contribute to the US economy they say stuff like this. "They work hard and pay taxes"

How do they paid taxes other than sales tax? If the illegals are paying income and property taxes they are doing it using a false SS number. Heck, if that is the standard for staying here, a tourist from England can stay because they pay taxes when they buy their souvenirs!

Brother had a very large company in the SW. He learned not to ask "Do you have a green card?" He learned to ask "Do you have a legal green card?"

For most of them, being truthful was more important than the job.

We are friends with the owner - with her brother it's been in the family 150 years- of the biggest Landscaping company here in South West Ohio. She is honest to the point that the company no longer "Hires" summer help. The company has been using a hiring service (for the last 10 years or so) for a certain category of workers. She has laughed about it as she said many of the workers are the same people but with different names each year!!! They pay the hiring service who then pays the workers.....

have to say.. I'm good with the possibility of a ICE visit to their "Farm"... She is a great friend but their company should not be doing this. Profits over integrity it seems.

My wife had to kicked me under the table once when I started asking too many questions... lol

Heck... ICE could visit any landscaping company in any city and find illegals.

Until we have leaders and educators who tell us and our kids that it is ok to get our hands dirty to make a living and DON'T tell everyone how important it is to go to college and no kid can be left behind, then I don't think we should penalize business owners for hiring illegals. We need a shift in this country showing kids that a hard day's work can make for an honest and decent living. Until that happens, we will never be able to fill all of our jobs with American citizens, so if you want your house cleaned, your roof replaced, your lawn mowed, or cheap fruit in the grocery store, don't penalize me, the business owner, for hiring an illegal to fulfill your needs and wants.

Yes, they need to be addressed, what I meant was hoping it didn't get routed back to you as the squeaker. Could make for awkward wife and friends relations...

Your right, thing and attitudes need to be changed... Case in point- 10 year or so we had a bad hail storm and there were 100's of roof with damage, mine included!

Insurance comes out and says they will pay so much for the full replacement. I contacted 3 different companies for quote etc...

One kind of well know company came out and said they could do the job for the amount the insurance offers (never asked what the amount was) and would complete the work in 2 days. I asked how that would be possible and he said he would have a crew of 10-15 people work the roof. I asked him if the workers are legal to work here. He said he didn't know as the "office" does the hiring. He didn't get the job. I gave the job to a small company. Work crew arrived and it was 2 brothers (from the hills of Kentucky) and their friend, a black guy. It took 5 days to complete the work and they came back on a Sunday afternoon to re-walk the yard to pick up items they missed.

This IS the current problem. Too many people being incentivized to sit at home (Welfare, SNAP, EBT, etc.) instead of working for a fair wage.
When the job is paying $2500/month but, Uncle Sugar will give you $2000/month to stay home... not much of a decision.
Also, people need to be prepared for increased prices. EVERYWHERE. American workers WILL demand and get higher wages and those WILL be passed on...

As long as people hire illegals then there is no pressure to pay the what the job is worth. Jobs in landscaping pay illegals $10.00 an hour which goes back to the home country which is good money there, a kid coming out of high school is going to have to make more to ever move out of the basement. I know it's going to drive up the prices of those goods and services, but if everyone is playing by the same rules everyone should stay competitive.
