I got an HP DV7-something. Sorry, can't remember the entire name of the thing. It is about the size of the top of a TV tray. It does everything I need it to do.

Get the best price and warrenty. My current Laptop is a Gateway and haven't had a problem in a year and a half

get the best price and be careful of warranties. So often they dont protect what breaks and you still have to pay for the back up discs- which you should make immediately. Most laps no longer come with them - so you make them, store them and protect them with your life so when the lap (not an if- when) needs repair you are prepared.
Newegg.come - tigerdirect.com

Asus is a great brand- gateway - very good indeed.

Comcrap- wouldnt do it

Dont be suckered by fancy crap that has nothing to do with the guts.

You know what guts- then find the best price for what you want- check reviews and dont be afraid of saving money buying a refurb.

Skip bestbuy- they suck in a nutshell, dont know their stuff and will charge way too much to share what inferior knowledge they have.

Dell's are proprietary, so if you want or need service/upgrades later, parts are more expensive. I have HP's and love them. On average a laptop can last 3 to 4 or more years if you keep up on antivirus ( I use free Microsoft Secruity Suite), registry check software (I use Registry Mechanic) and keep it on a chill pad to keep the heat drawn away from it. Heat is what kills them fastest and the super thin ones tend to not have alot of breathing room. I have an Intel core i5 and it runs very cool. I hate a hot laptop, as it's uncomfortable to have your palms on all day. JMHO

Oh, I agree with the "avoid BESTBUY" comment. I get my laptops from Staples and they are much nicer to deal with, plus they don't incur a 15% restocking fee if you find your computer doesn't meet your needs and want to return it w/in the specified time.

Like other's said, buy direct if you can... you avoid the additional bloatware tagged on by the seller and your warranty is with the maker instead of the seller...

I'm the IT Director for my company... I buy all Dell equipment, but it is business shop, not home shop... Warranties are better, and service is better... As far as parts when one is out of warranty I go to: Dell Laptop Parts | Dell Parts | Dell Laptop Repair | Dell Repair buy the part and install it myself...

Your mileage can vary with any vendor... Biggest problems with the dells have been motherboards over the years... Left HP because I couldn't get one to last over a year without the power supply going bad (okay that was 10 years ago!)... Especially in their servers...

My current laptop is a Dell Precision M6500 with an i7 with 12GB of RAM... I have it set for dual boot Ubuntu and WinPro7 64bit... why? Cause Windows really does suck sometimes... :buddies:

What do you or others use for a chill pad. I have a Sony Vaio VPCF115FM (Really Like It - Win7 64 on Internal and Ubuntu 12.04 External USB) that cooks a lot of the time when playing WOW or heavy graphics. Have one chiller under it but not totally satisfied with it. Would like something better. Sorry about slightly off topic. But agree with keeping it cool!

And "Yes" stay away from Best-Buy! NewEgg, Amazon is two I use. And besides my Sony HD Laptop I have two Acer Netbooks.
