Bye Bye Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach is my favorite place to go, I dont even own a bike, but I think they are making a big mistake, the businesses are going to be the one who are going to be hurting.
The rallies are in off peak times of the year, and brings business in, Ive been on vacation a couple of times during the fall bike week down there, I saw no problems during those times and besides some of those bikers chicks were :hot:
I hope they stopped and thought about how many other people may not take vacations because of the fuel prices and the impact that will have on the economy of Myrtle Beach .

Exactly. Business, including real estate will suffer HUGE losses. Condo rental as well as hotel rental and campsite resorts all depend on those rallies. MANY businesses were built solely on the the May and October boom brought in by motorcyclists.

The spring Rally brings in 500,000 - 750,000 motorcycles. If only HALF of those brough their SO's with them, that's 750,000 people spending a TON of money. Not sure if you non-bikers know this, but Bikers at rallies, ain't cheap.

I just don't understand why they would opt to do away with it. You are talking about 2 week long interuptions during off season times, in peaceful surroundings, making a HUGE spike in Myrtle Beach's economy.

You'd think that as bad as the economy is right now, as many houses, condos, etc that are on the market there, and everywhere else, MB would welcome any income that they can get. Myrtle Beach must not be doing too bad. Didn't realize that that many people are opting to go to Myrtle Beach instead of other destinations this year for their family vacations.

It's...

...a quality of life issue. Yeah, biker rallies have become a hell of a lot more family friendly over the years, but there are still plenty of trouble makers and problems that come from that many free spirits being in one place at one time.

You can be sure they've thought about the money. That they're even considering it tells you how big the regular family trade is.

The "comments" part of the article gives me the impression that the crotch rocket crowd is the actual problem but the council doesn't have the balls to differentiate.

Atlantic Beach leaders say bikers still welcome

Despite Myrtle Beach's intention to spend $1 million driving away two large bike rallies during the month of May, Atlantic Beach leaders say bikers are still welcome during the Memorial Day weekend festival they sponsor.

"We're our own municipality, and I don't see us stopping it," said Mayor Pro Tem Charlene Taylor. "They can stop what they want to stop. The Grand Strand is open to the public.''

The accusations of open air drug use and sexual activity on Ocean Boulevard do not reflect the activities inside Atlantic Beach, town council members said.

The festival inside Atlantic Beach is predominantly a family affair, Taylor said, with people of all ages coming to walk the streets of the town, admire each other's motorcycles, eat at vendors' booths and spend money on souvenirs.

A follow up to that story. I posted it on my website and this is what someone sent me.

But wait, there's more...
That sucks! :ohwell: Guess we'll take our money elsewhere to a community that wants/needs it. I do feel bad for the local motorcycle businesses ... you know they will suffer greatly. We had a great time at the fall rally, and have reservations for the same condo resort for this coming fall rally ... if it happens. I was rather looking forward to a return to Suck/Bang/Blow. :frown:

FTA: "But Brown said many of the people who come for the Harley-Davidson-related rallies in May and October..."

Too bad for the thundering herd. Either way, it doesn't matter to me. My days of group rides with folks of limited skills or sense are long gone.

It doesn't bother me much as I've never been to Myrtle Beach, for a bike rally or otherwise. What gets me is the way they're going about it. A property tax increase to fund eliminating the bike rallies.

They are definately going about it the wrong way. I wonder how many home owners who rent their homes and condos out where at that meeting? I can't believe they are trying to get May to be family vacation month. Kids are still in school and parents aren't/ shouldn't be taking their kids out for a week while school is still in session.

Last I heard it was a free country.

They can stop the Vendors from setting up , but most people who ride have all the biker #### they need anyway. They cant close the bars or SBB and other placs bikers frequent, they cant tell the hotels and Motels who they can rent to and they cant stop the Condo renters.

Might be nice going there without all the vendors people could find it more pleasant riding the backroads and exploring.

I started going there about twenty years ago and its gotten too crowded anyway , might be great to have less bikes there.

I will be going next year same time and they can kiss my butt.
