Calvert County Deck Code?

Hope someone can help me out. I figured when I got the deck permit that they would hand me the code for what they were looking for. I was told I would need to speak to an inspector to get the specific codes. I am having a bugger of a time doing that. Does anyone know what they will be looking for when it comes to the footers? How big, deep, thick do they expect them? The deck will be attached to the house and the span that the joists will be sitting on will be 12' away from the house. Also, can the posts be set in the concrete footer, or do they need to sit on top of them? I wish the county would have some literature that would spell out what they are looking for. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yup that is their information. Just can't get through to an inspector. They are available from 3-4pm, and when I call I get sent to voicemail. I must not be catching them at a good time. Unless I am missing something, I don't see the codes on the link you sent. I printed that out and it helped get them what they needed to give me the permit. Now I just need to know how they want me to put in the footers.

It depends on what dimension lumber you are using. If you are using 6"x6" posts with 2"x10" joist, then the span can't be more than 8' in any direction. Your first set of posts can't be more than 4' from the house (I think). Cantilevers can be no more than 4'.

The post holes (for 6"x6") have to be 16" in diameter and 24" deep. You are suppose to pour an 8" concrete pad in the bottom of each hole and set the post on the pad and then pour the rest in concrete.

The inspector will come out twice, once to inspect the holes before you pour any concrete and again to inspect the finished product.

I am not an expert by any means, but I just went through all this recently. Good Luck! :buddies:

Thanks Rockfish. That is the info I was looking for. Just want to give the inspectors what they are looking for the first time they come out. Looks like I have some digging to do.
