Calvert Marine Museum concerts

We are going there tomorrow evening for the Doobie Brothers concert (only one original Doobie left I'm told but oh well).

Has anyone been there before for one of their concerts? I bought the tickets almost immediately after they went on sale for members and I'm still 6 rows from the back of the Pink section. Don't understand that one - but what type of seating is it? Stadium? All on one level?

Where do you park? In the field across the street?

Sorry for all the questions - just want some info before we go. Hope it's worth our $$$$.

Besides the pre-sale of tickets for members of the Marine Museum, the sponsors of the show get blocks of tickets up front. It is all one level - folding metal chairs all crammed together. Pray you aren't sitting next to a really large person. Security doesn't like people to stand up, so expect to be told to sit down if you do. The only time this didn't apply was when half the people left the show because of the torrential rain. The show still went on, but the seats were empty. People just moved up and stood because the chairs were soaked.

There is parking in the field across from the museum if you get there early. Gates open at 6:00. If you get there late, they will direct you to parking down by the firehouse (IIRC) and shuttle you to the show.

Inside, they have food and beer/wine for sale. The lines are usually pretty long, and the food just ok, so we like to eat before we go.

We were thinking about going to see Sarah Evans in July. do you know how much the tickets are if you're not a member? And where would I get them?

Thanks!

Thanks for the info! :howdy: We are going with another couple and we had planned to get something to eat before we went in. Probably a good idea from the sound of things.

Hope we have a good time - I'll let you know.

I sat in third row for Crosby, Still & Nash last year, great show.
If you sit too far back, just forget it.
Also saw Little Feat, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt etc....
Marine Museum is NOT a great music venue...
but not too bad as a social venue !
If you get in the first 20 rows, you're doing good!
If not, just count it off as a social night out !
or
Stay home and watch a music video !

Just thought I would update everyone on our concert experience - the Doobie Brothers rocked! :larry: I didn't think they would be as good as the original band since only Pat Simmons is left but I'm not kidding when I say that they sounded exactly like the original band. They were great! Their opening act was absolutely awful. The worst 45 minutes I've ever had to spend at the beginning of a concert. The Doobies should really re-think their choice of an opening act.

Now, as far as the points that were shared in this thread about security/food/parking/seating -

(1) Security was plentiful but I'm not sure for what reason. People were standing up and no one was told to sit down. Fortunately, it didn't happen in front of us too much but you could see it all around. Everyone stood for Black Water and pretty much remained standing for the rest of the concert (about another 20 minutes or so). We were then forced to stand as well in order to see the band.

(2) Food - there was a mini food court set up with crab cakes, Papa John's pizza, italian sausage, etc. Beer and wine were flowing. Not exactly cheap (italian sausage was $6) but cheaper than the lousy meal we got at Catamaran's. That's a whole 'nother story. Next time - we will get there at 6:00 and just grab something inside.

(3) Parking was fine if you don't mind walking through a hay field. $2.00 is pretty reasonable I think - I was holding out a $5.00 in expectation of it being more expensive. I was pleasantly surprised. I thought that the police did a good job of getting everyone out of town, too. Didn't have to sit long at all to get out of the parking area and out to Rt. 4.

(4) The seating is all on one level which they don't really have a choice given the venue. The chairs were the very cheap, plastic folding and we were crammed in there like sardines. You literally could not move without nudging the person next to you. I thought it was a little too crammed. They could do away with one chair on each row and it would make a big difference.

Anyway, still enjoyed the show immensely. They played music for a solid 75 minutes - no breaks - and then gave a terrific encore performance.

Too bad I have to go to work today....

Thanks for the review. $2 is very reasonable for parking.

Good to hear they gave a good show. Not to start a Doobies thread, but I think Tommy Johnson and Mike Hossack (one of the drummers) have been around with them so long that they're virtually charter members...

I thought the opening act, ALternate Routes, were VERY good. I bought the CD, and REALLY like it. They aren't the same style of music as the Doobies, so the promoter could have done a better job and I can see how many Doobie Fans wouldn't like them, but all in all, I thought it was a great night!

I din't realize that there was only one original member. They all looked old enough, 'cept for the keyboardist, to be original members. I was never a fan but liked the music.

Did anyone else that went notice how much the bass guitarist resembled "Grady" from "Sanford and Son"? Grady can play!

First and last show I'll ever go to over there, I think a kid from Great Mills High School could have done a better job with the sound system.

The sound for that show was absolutely horrible. I saw concerts before that, and after that, that were MUCH better. Crap, even saw Alman Bros there in a torrential downpour with wind, lightening and thunder and the sound never went out, crackled or faded and sounded 10 times better than it did for the CSN show. Even the guys in CSN made a few comments about it during the show. It was ridiculous.

Your right - they did play a different kind of music than the Doobies. Their first song was okay and they went south from there..just my .02.

I thought that the sound was horrible when the Doobies started playing. They had the base so amped that it was literally pounding me in my chest and you couldn't hear the singer. Then, it seemed they adjusted it over the next couple songs and it wasn't nearly as bad.

"Skylark" as he is known seemed to be having a good time playing bass guitar. He was in his own little world over there. When we went back in between the drummers and was playing under the spotlight, it looked like he was taking a shower with the amount of sweat flying off of him. He was good, though. I was very impressed with the whole band.

PS - to the person who left me green karma and told me Catamaran's sucked "wang," thank you. I will consider myself enlightened, not only intellectually but also financially since the meal was not exactly cheap and not exactly what I ordered.

PSS - to the person who left me gray on my review, bug off.

I only remembered them having grown up at a young age watching What's Happening. I didnt know they were a real group until I was a little older. But I LOVED them based on that show and I really like their music. I listen to a few songs today even. :flowers:

Third row, sound was good but I heard many say that the overall mix was bad that night !
In fact, I know one guy who was at the boards that night and he told me that the speakers that they where supposed to get were never delivered !
