UPS installation soon....
I just got a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) for the scanner feed computer, scanner, and the related internet connectivity / support equipment.
I am in "test" mode with the UPS hooked up to a different computer at the moment. I will be reworking all the power connections to the scanner feed computer so, hopefully, the scanner feed will be able to stay online during the times when folks need it the most, i.e., when things are going to hell in a handbasket (bad weather, etc.).
It'll be a couple of days until I do the switchover (*not* today) and I will post in this thread when the feed goes down for this activity. It'll be down for a couple of hours when I do this.
I just rewired the DSL line to my NID (Network Interface Demarc) and installed a DSL NID Splitter to give me the most reliable internet connection possible. I switched over to DSL from Cable because I found that high speed internet via Comcast A) dropped offline on a regular basis for reasons only Comcast knows and B) dropped offline *instantly* when there was a power outage anywhere near Lusby, it became obvious that Comcast does NOT have backup power on their systems -- at least not on their Internet support infrastructure. Since DSL is part of the "Phone System" my theory is that there is "critical infrastructure" level of UPS on the Central Office, and the CO support for DSL will stay online in the event of most general power outages. Realistically, "The Internet" is going to go away pretty quickly in most natural disaster situations. Thus, I am mostly setting up to ride out "storm damage" sort of situations where power may be out for a day or two at most, and almost all power outages are less than one hour.
It's a theory.
I have a backup generator for the house here and a backup fuel supply for it, my disaster planning to to be able to support operations for a minimum of 96 hours without SMECO power. I hope to never need to execute this plan though!
How's YOUR personal disaster plan, BTW? Do you have a plan? Think about it!
