Little ol' Me
I know I know we've had this conversation before.

For Christmas I would like to get a new camera but I want a good one. One that I can grow with, not just a point and shoot.
Problem is I have a nerological (sp) shake which normally messes up my pictures (makes them blurry) so I want something that can stop that. Looking to spend up to about $600.00. I was looking at the Cannon EOS Rebel XSi.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Nikon D60 Black 10.2 MP Digital SLR Camera Kit w/ 18-55mm VR (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization Lens $575.00

Is one brand better than the other Cannon/Nikon?

or is it like Ford/Chevy just what you like?

Sanchezf, The Xsi is a good DSLR, but it doesn't have image Stabilization built in to it like some others. You would have to get image stabilization out of the lenses you buy for it, which will run you more money.

18-55 3.5-5.6 IS lens $170 This is the cheapest
28-135 3.5-5.6 IS lens $394
70-300 3.5-5.6 IS lens $500

There are DSLRs now that have the stabilization built into the cameras sensor. This maybe a better option. Some of the cameras I found that are like this and around your price range are listed below.

Olympus E520 and E510

Sony Alpha A300, A200, and A350

Pentax K200D, D20D, and K100

Another option would be to use a monopod when you shoot.
This is a great option if you are willing to carry it with you. Most people try to hand hold a camera in condition where they need a monopod or tripod anyway.

The XS(1000)here comes with an image stabilization lens. The XSI has more pixels and a bigger screen though.
Canon | EOS Rebel XS (a.k.a. 1000D) SLR Digital | 2763B003 | B&H

You can add lenses and filter etc as you can afford them. Also, get a tripod.

It is just like Ford vs Chevy. Each have slim advantages over others.
The D40 and D60 Nikons are probably a step under the Xsi Canon thou.

The D80 Nikon would be the same level as the Xsi

Use the view finder.

Everytime I see folks using the preview window to frame/take shots I want to :smack: them

Actually I do use the view finder, I have to because I shake so bad I can't see a still picture in the window. Pictures do come out better using the view finder but they are still not clear (like what I see from ya'll).

Have you thought about getting a tripod too? I know it isn't practical for everything but may be another option depending on what you want to photograph.

Thank you very much

You are very welcome.

Another tool the overcome the shake is good old school use of flash. Get a camera with a hot shoe. Get the most powerfull flash you can. Shoot inside with just enough light to focus right. The flash will freeze the image for you.

The VERY short flash burst is in my opinion the best way to freeze an image. It will take time to learn its best use though.

Also a tripod and cable release will work very well.
