Racism, Sexism and Speed: Can NASCAR Be Saved From Itself?

"For the last decade, NASCAR has tried to shed its legacy as a sport indelibly linked to the confederate flag. Motorsports execs understand that if their sport is ever to go global, burning rubber can't be associated with burning crosses.

However, despite NASCAR's efforts to improve their image, it's still a sport where racism thrives below the surface and sexism in the form of bikini-clad NASCAR eye candy is proudly paraded around the speedway, as much a part of the scenery as the stars and bars.

NASCAR is in danger of being marginalized by this contradiction. They're attempting to reach an international audience while displaying the worst kind of backward provincialism."

Yet almost half of the fans at the races are women, and we've got more and more women and minorities racing in the lower-tier ranks.

Marc Davis

Chrissy Wallace

Alli Owens

Jesus Hernandez

JUAN PABLO MONTOYA

At least NASCAR has their first race here, in America, rather than in Japan. :killingme

Also, we have races in Canada and Mexico and they love their NASCAR races.

It's a copy+paste from a liberal blog.

To liberals, racing will always be drunk rednecks watching racecars go in circles while flying a confederate flag. They have no open mind about racing.

Unfortunately, those idiots that throw beer cans at Wildthing every week don't do the sport any justice.

Navy puts brakes on NASCAR sponsorship

"Navy officials have decided to pull the plug on their support for a NASCAR racing team after seven seasons and concentrate instead on other types of advertising products.

The decision on whether to go ahead with another year of the $6.5 million was due July 1.

"This won't impact the remaining portion of this season; we'll see it through," said Capt. Jack Hanzlik, spokesman for the Navy's chief of personnel in Arlington, Va. "It is also no reflection on JR Motorsports as we have been very pleased with our relationship and the team's performance — we just think it's time to head in a different strategic direction."

These are two very good racers who deserve a shot at bigger and better things. I'll add Mexico's Rogelio Lopez as another, although he's had just terrible racing luck this year.

I've seen a handful of women try their hand at NASCAR and none have really impressed me. The most recent, Michelle Theriault, started last year strong but couldn't sustain that for the whole year and I don't think she's racing anything anywhere nowadays.

I'm very impressed by what I've seen with Alli Owens. I'm still holding judgement on Chrissy Wallace.

Also, keep an eye on Lindsey King. I think she's got some potential - my friend works on her race team, they've run rock solid every week at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale.

Let them rally in a top fuel car or even a lowly pro stock car, and see if they can handle it.........:lmao:
Alcohol Funny Car. :yay:

On that note, John Andretti raced top fuel dragster. I KNOW Richard Petty used to race in drag racing, he raced at Aquasco once. NASCAR used to have a Drag Racing series.

I wouldn't be surprised if they bought NHRA, though it's not likely.

Good articles, Andy. I don't follow ARCA for squat but I've been to Irwindale a handful of times. Epic racetrack.

What?
Have you ever even watched World Rally Car racing?
Apples and oranges, and I dare not say that a drag racer has anything on guys/women that race through the woods, in snow and ice, on gravel and dirt, on tarmac, and through the deserts, of the entire world.
Furthermore, I have yet to see an unfit fat ass sitting in/driving a World Rally Car.
"see if they can handle it"
What an ignorant statement:duh:

It's more fun driving the beltway. Faster too!! :jet:

Only fun thing about watching a rally race is when a car crashes into the crowd of dolts standing along the road. :darwincandidates: :killingme
