Can't keep your Pet?

It seems like a lot of folks convince themselves that the shelter will do everything in its power to find a great home for Fido or Fluffy despite his or her age, health or manners. Most people cannot face the truth that their beloved pet :sarcasm: will be under terribly stressful conditions for the remainder of its life; which may be only a matter of minutes after an owner surrender to a shelter.
Ex-animal owner in denial of the truth can walk away convinced that they did the right thing and not feel guilt for throwing their beloved pet away.

Exactly. I've never been into a shelter cause' I'm a wimp and it would upset me so bad. But I know people who go there and they have told me in detail about the shelters. Not good. I cannot imagine taking my babies there for any reason because they would be better off dead I believe. Horrible but true.

I couldn't bring myself to read more than half of that post. I am a dog lover and can't imagine doing that to my two 4 legged kids. If it were up to me, I'd have a dozen.

Maybe people turning in animals SHOULD be required to do 8 hours of community service, no exceptions.

So I read the whole thing and what I got out of it was if you really can no longer keep your pet you should do the humane thing and take it straight to a vet to be put down.

Wow.. Thats horrible... It's probably to make owners more aware of what acually happens to pets in a shelter. I've gotten most of my pets from the shelter and they are the most lovable animals.

:yay: If I had to give up my kitties for whatever reason, I'd try to find them homes myself. None of them would do well in a shelter environment, and Claudia may not even do well in another home, given her age.

And if I couldn't personally find them a new home, I would have them put down.

The good news is that it's unlikely I will ever be in that position.

If I had to give up my cat and/or dog, I'd do the same.....find them homes myself. I find it hard to believe that people don't know a single person who would take their pet if needed, assuming the pet is not aggressive, destructive, etc.

Does my Mom want a dog? Not really, but if my son suddenly became allergic she'd take my dog rather than have me put him in a shelter and she'd take great care of him. Co-workers, friends, relatives. How can people just leave a pet who they've had for years?

You got through half of it? I won't even read it because I know it'll break my heart. I'd agree with the community service except it may cause people to just abandon the animal on the streets instead in order to avoid community service. Some people are heartless and don't treat their pets like family. My dog can be a real pita at times. My cat still pretty much ignores hubby, even after 6 years of us being together. :killingme But they're both still a part of our family.
