A friend gave me his old car. Only problem is I can't open up the driver's side door lock with the key, so I have to keep it unlocked unless I want to go through the passenger side each time. He said someone broke into his car while he was in NY, so they musta effed the lock. Where can I get this fixed or is it something I can try fixing myself? kinda cold right now though.....

Nothing to see here
You could always replace the locks. No Idea whjat a pain in the Azz it would be. I replaced the ones on my 64 impala and it was simple to do. I am sure times have changed.

the first thing you need to know is, is the lock broken? or is the rod going to lock off of the lock? If someone slim-jimmed the door the rod could just be off the lock.

You are going to have to at least change that one lock cylinder unless a lock smith can get it to work again. Good luck!

Like service guy said it might be a loose rod. If its not the rod, then autozone, or advanced sells new lock cylinders. Not sure what kind of car it is, but it took me all of 20 min to replace the ones in my camaro when i had it. If it comes to replacing the cylinder you might want to replace both the driver and passanger side at the same time so you can use the same key. I think mine where like 14.00 for 2.

the car is a ford taurus, 96 or 97. i think the problem might be the lock cylinder because i can't even turn the key. looks bent up, maybe someone broke into the car with a screwdriver, or lock pick

Thats an expensive lock cylinder

Here is a used one, but it might be confusing with more keys.

Thanks for the help! I'll see if I can get the cylinder from autozone, I'm not sure about the one from ebay since I don't have power locks. I don't want to have to change keys from door, to ignition, I only want to worry about having one key, but if it's gonna cost so much, i'll just deal with it since I will be using it to commute to work. My pretty gas guzzlin SUV can wait for me on the weekends.

Not a problem. They should give you 4 cylinders for that price, but i know different places charge different. Check advanced too, the online parts store showed one for 37, but i would check around.

I hear you on the SUV, my new one is at least better than my blazer was.

good luck with the lock change out.

The factory replacement part is a kit with interchangable tumblers so it can be made to fit your key. Might not hurt to check into one.
