Hi,

I just moved here and need to get my car inspected before I can get it registered... does anyone know somewhere in St. Mary's County where I can get this done (with a reasonable price)? I appreciate any help!

Thanks

Mike Hewitts on 235, next to the bowling ally. They're also one of the few places that will inspect a bike.
Speaking of which, what kind of bike do you ride?

The prices are pretty much set, I believe. Where in the county?

Just a warning, but when you register your car, the "Free" state will hit you up for sales tax (5%) on the blue book value of your car.

:yeahthat: Unless things have changed since I worked at an inspection station, the prices are regulated by the state.

Only if you don't register it within 30 days of being in the state unless they've changed the law in the last few years.

When I registered my Explorer, they only charged me $75. I told them I paid $800 for my Explorer (I really paid $3800). I guess they have a minimum fee for if something is under KBB? I was expecting to pay more.

I think you are thinking of a penalty for not registering in time. This is a tax to avoid people buying out of state to avoid sales tax. You have to pay it even if you buy a used vehicle in state.

Bought a new car in Ca. Transfered back here to Md. Paid the Ca. tax on the vehicle and didn't register it in Md until I was back here 60 days. Didn't know about the law and my Calif tags were still good. The lovely state of effing Md charged me the full tax of $600 to register the car even though I paid the sales tax in Ca. And they could prove when I entered the state through my military orders. Unless they've changed the law you will have to pay.

I think we are saying the same thing.

I had a bad experience with them. They forgot to tighten my lug nut covers down on my wheel covers and I lost one. Mine are about $125 a piece. The Mr. Tire on Great mills i have heard is good.

I stay away from them too if I can help it.

Never had a problem with them. They're a little pricey, but no complaints on any work they've done.

... and I've learned that no matter where you go for tire/wheel work, it only takes a minute to break out the lug wrench and check all the lug nuts.

I've started doing that before I leave, mainly to make sure I can budge them.

They are, I guess, the one time that cracked me up was when I brought a trailor in to be inspected. The guy wanted me to hook it up to my truck to see if the lights worked. I told him I hadn't done the truck wiring yet so he said, "well then I can't pass it". I asked what are you inspecting here the truck or the trailor? He got pissed and just signed off the sheet!

NOT Politically Correct!!
From the MVA web site: http://mva.state.md.us/VehicleServ/REG/NewtoMd.htm

Maryland Excise Titling Tax
If the vehicle has been recently purchased, the 5% excise tax is based on the greater of the total purchase price verified by a notarized MVA Bill of Sale (form VR-181), signed by both the buyer(s) and the seller(s) in which the actual price paid for the vehicle is stated or $640. In other cases, the total purchase price or the valuation shown in a national publication of used car values adopted for use by the Administration will be used to establish the tax. There is an addition or subtraction for high or low mileage. On vehicles seven years old and older, the tax is based on the greater of the purchase price or the minimum book value of $640.

Note: As a new resident, to comply with Maryland law and take advantage of a lower excise tax, you must title and register your vehicle within 60 days of moving to Maryland.

For vehicles less than 7 years old:

Vehicle(s) titled in a state with a tax rate equal to or higher than Maryland's 5% tax rate will cost $100.
If the vehicle is registered in a state that imposes no tax, the tax will be assessed at 5% of the value of the vehicle.
Vehicles from a state with a lower tax rate than Maryland's 5% will be taxed at the rate of the difference between the two states. Example: MD 5%, VA 3%, the difference is a 2% tax rate. Minimum tax - $100. When the value of the vehicle is less than $2,000, the 5% rate will apply.
For a vehicle over 7 years old:
Tax is based on the greater of the purchase price or the minimum of $640. The MVA may require you to submit additional documentation to substantiate the purchase price.
For a leased vehicle:
Lease agreement and proof of monthly lease payments (leased vehicles only) – If you have paid or are paying excise tax to another state through your lease payments, the documents may be needed to determine the amount of excise tax credit you may receive.

On a closing note, just because you move to the state doesn't necessarily mean you have a vehicle; I went and picked up one of our vehicles 6 months after we moved here and used the date of when I brought the vehicle into the state (for the 60 day timer), not the day I moved here. With that said, just put a date down 60 days or less when registering, I had zero problems... :coffee:
