Car Safety Inspection

I moved to the area and need to register my car in Maryland. I understand I'll need a safety inspection for this. Can anyone recommend a decent place to get this done for a fair price?

Thanks in advance.

Pricing will be about the same anywhere you go (about $50). I have had recent luck using Southern Tire and Auto Center in Charlotte Hall (301-884-8116).

You sure you are talking about the Maryland Safety Inspection required when registering a vehicle?

Where are you located? That has a great impact on what places to reccomend. If you are in Ridge, it's not like you want to drive all the way to Charlotte Hall to get it inspected, when you can get it done at Joe's Garage, right down the street from your house.

I'm located in Tall Timbers so anything from Leonardtown/Hollywood south would work for me.

You may want to try Mark's Automotive in Lexington Park. He is just South of Gate #2 (Pax River) on Route 235 South. He's down on the righthand side.

I just took one of my cars there that I am planning to sell and had that Maryland Inspection done. I think it was $60.00 and he treated me right.

Good Luck....

Mark has recently moved into the former Steve's Car Care building just south of the Main Gate. I agree that he will treat you right, and he's probably much umm... friendlier and more customer oriented than the previous repair shop in that building.

I haven't had a car inspected in this area of maryland, so I can't recommend anyone...Just wanted to prepare you in case you are from a state that does yearly inspections. In maryland your car gets inspected only when you buy it, or it transfer owners. So the inspection is a lot more detailed then states that just do a drive-thru style inspection. I used to work in a garage, and from my experience, anything older than 5-6 years will fail inspection for something or other. The amount of things checked is pretty long..but even stuff like, are your windshield wipers torn, do the wipers park, windows and doors open properly, parking break and horn working, all lights. All those little things that people don't think matter:) Not to mention ball joints, break pads, tire wear, rotors etc.
Just thought I'd mention this, since I know some people are surprised when they get their first MSI and their 7 year old car fails with tons of little stuff, even tho their car passes the yearly inspections in another state.

I agree with mkl... Maryland vehicle inspections are very detailed compared to other states. They check more minor items like your "gear indicator" on automatic transmission vehicles. If the car's in Drive but it indicates "3" instead of "D" they fail the vehicle. They might gig you for an wheel alignment when your cars runs straight down the road?

Mark from Mark's Automotive did me right on all three of my vehicles when I moved here a couple of years ago. He was in a different location then. Some of my cars are older too, like 20 years old and 24 years old and he passed them. They are well maintained though for older cars.

I went there a couple of weeks ago with a 20 year old car I'm planning to sell and it passed with a very minor repair required. I wanted the inspection to help sell the car. Mark's mechanic named Joe worked on my car. Nice guy, knowledgeable too.

I went in on Sat. morning at about 10:00am and was out of there by 12:00 noon.

That is one sweet car! Your Mom's boss has good taste in cars and must also have a pretty good job to afford that car.....

The rule I've always heard was buy the newest Porsche you can afford.

They generally improve on their cars year after year after year. For example, the 356 from the 1950's morphed into the 911 in 1965. The 911 continued to be improved throughout the years into the new 911 of today.

There are a few models and years to avoid but not too many.

There are some really good affordable, older Porsches available for sale fairly cheap.

Hey 911,
Just found out my Mom's boss took delivery of his new toy yesterday. 2005 911 GT3 Club.

Zoinks! Gee, the 911 GT3 costs $102,000. If you want the carbon interior package and the ceramic brakes (which aren't all the options), you are now talking $115,570. It is good to be the boss.
