the drive train always did that 'CLUNK' when dropped into gear

the previous owner had used the Bronco to tow something 14 ft long [RV type thing IIRC] for many yrs ... obviously the 8.8 wasn't really up for that

I probably should have R&R it some point in the last 4 yrs I own the truck

it looks like the pinion bearing is loose, and has some slop and the pinion has been slowly getting deeper and deeper in the housing towards the carrier

so off to the junk yard I go .... nothing there worth rebuilding ....

the wife unit called me from the WW Bridge, the truck is making this grinding noise when I go around the ramp to get on 95 south, and there was this BANG

obviously the 'bang' was an already broken gear tooth, taking a 2nd trip around the carrier on the ring gear

I will post pics tomorrow of all the teeth I remove from the bottom

Been there before. 89 S10 with the 7.5 rear. That clunk is a terrifying sound, and the corresponding jump felt like the truck was going to fall apart. Best time to rebuild.

Now are you looking for a rebuild, the entire carrier etc.
