Cat going outside the litter box

Litter box is clean, so that's not the issue. Litter has not changed, so that's not the issue.

If we leave the door to our room open, our oldest cat will run in and pee on my stuff.

Was in the basement yesterday, in an area I don't usually go in, and noticed smell of cat pee. Went looking. Found a stack of magazines the cat has been using as her own private litter box for a while. Both pee and poop.

Any thoughts on why the cat has started doing this? She'll be 15 years old this coming Labor Day.

How many litter boxes do you have? Are the younger kittens bothering her?

Sometimes when a cat gets older, they forget good litter box habits.

you might need a trip to the vet to remedy this. I had the same problem with one of my cats and the vet gave me amatryptoline (sp) to help calm her nerves down. I had moved to ny and lived with my aunt and that is when it all started because my aunt had a cat (my aunts cat never been with others and my aunt forced me to get rid of her she was 10yrs old and my aunt thought me having 3 cats was too much). I to this date will never ever be nice to her again due to all of this. I mean who in there right mind would get rid of a senior cat (I thought my aunts cat should have went bye bye as my cats had all been together and had no issues it was sadie who was chasing my cats from the litterbox etc as she thought she was queen bee and thought my cat didn't need to use the litterbox and everytime she went to go in she would chase her out.

2 boxes.
Kitten doesn't mess with her (she's taught him better :smack::smack: get away whippersnapper, you bother me). That's what I am afraid of.

You have 4 cats, right? Not enough litter boxes. Try getting another box...maybe even a bigger one, like a rubbermaid container. You can get them at WalMart, etc. It's longer and wider and easier for an older cat to get in/out of and have space. I'd put a box where she was pottying in the basement and see if that helps her.

Sometimes, they are trying to tell you something is wrong as well. If it continues after adding another litter box, I would make an appointment with your vet.

UTI? Bladder stone?

I don't know cats very well, but I've heard of this with other friends with cats.

I had an 18-year-old female who did the same thing (2 additional younger male cats in the house). After exhausting all possibilities, I took her to the vet. The vet moved a white cotton ball in front of the cat's face, and she didn't see it - she had gone blind and was relying on her sense of smell only. This is an easy and quick check - might save you a larger vet bill.

She can still see. Growls at people/cats that come within her comfort zone. Still deadly accurate with her paws when she smacks.

Can she walk Okay? One of my girls got so bad with her hind legs she couldn't lift them over the box rim. She was 18 years old and had muscle atrophy in her hind legs.:frown:

Walk, run, jump all ok.

15 year old kitty really should go see the vet sooner than later. I had a female cat that started peeing in the dogs water bowl. I knew she was trying to tell me something. After the vet ran test it was easily diagnosed and treated. Is your kitty usually biatchie? Some will do that if they are in pain and kidney, bladder problems can hurt. It does sound like a Vet issue.

Yes, she hates children and other animals, especially kittens, even when she was a kitten herself.

This thing in the basement may have started after we locked her out of our bedroom, which she has always considered her domain, but we did that because she started going to the bathroom in there....usually on huntr's stuff. THAT problem may be a reaction to the kitten that we got in August. It didn't start right away, but as kitten got more comfortable and bigger (he's bigger than she is, despite only being 8 months old) she may have felt the need to claim her territory.

Bingo! I'll bet a new litter box in a private location will help her.

Bought another large litter box. Put it next to the other big one. Moved the smaller one to where she was messing. She's been using it. :yay:

She goes to the vet on Wednesday.
