Cat peeing

A couple years ago I got a kitten from the tri county shelter. When she was about 6 months I would catch her peeing in our sink or on clothes/towels left on the bathroom floor. I always checked the litter box thinking maybe it hadnt been cleaned and she didnt want to use a dirty litter box. Nope, litter box is always clean. We started leaving the bathroom door closed and she would find clothes on the floor or a little rug to go on. In August we moved to a new house. She still does the same thing. We have small rugs in front of our doors to catch dirt and to leave our shoes on and she frequently pees on them. I am not talking about a little tinkle either. I'm talking Soaks the stuff. Any clue why she does this??
I am not a cat person, my boyfriend is the cat lover who had to get this cat, and now we are both ready to kill her. He is afraid she is going to stink up his new house/new carpet, with good reason. He got mats with rubber backing to put on the carpet by the doors now and he thought that was working but we caught her at it again twice this past week. (she likes to bunch up the stuff before she pees on it so figured she wouldnt go on the rubberish mats)Any one got a fix?? besides getting rid of the cat, which we are starting to seriously think about.

First, has she been fixed?

Seen the vet for underlying cause? A UTI could cause her to urinate in inappropriate places, but she probably wouldn't be able to soak things with the discomfort of one. A vet could suggest other medical causes for inappropriate urination.

Have there been any new additions (animals, people, major change in layout) to the house?

Has the litter box been moved recently?

Borrow a large dog crate. Confine her with a litter box until she learns how to use the litter box again. Sounds mean, but it works! Only let her out while she is being supervised. Worked for our cat. She was having a tantrum and peeing on towels in the bathroom and such. She got the message that she wasn't coming out of the crate till she used the box again.

Good idea. You might want to try re-acquainting her to the home. I've read that this is a good technique for introducing cats to new homes, with a box inside for them to hide in and their food opposite their litter box. A blanket over a large portion is good for a stressed or otherwise ill-adjusted cat. Ignore her when changing out food and water for a while, but do activities near the crate. When she starts to show an interest, "accidentally" leave your hand within paw's reach. Baby steps :)

She is spayed, she had a UTI in the past but is fine now. I think the UTI may have started the peeing in the sink..that is how we fond she had the UTI. Blood in urine. She has been fine since then at least health wise. Otherwise she is a normal cat, mostly lazy with bouts of maniacal playing. We have 2 dogs that she gets along great with, she even lets the dogs groom her and loves it. She really has no stress in her life. She does use the litter box 98% of the time. If i didnt know better I would swear this kitty is just being a spiteful little *itch. We may try the crate thing, esp when we are not home durring the day. Not sure if we could stand her in the crate when we are around she is a very loud upset kitty when confined at all. Her litter box is in our laundry room and I could close her in there, but I really think she would try to go through the door.
Her food and water are also in the laundry room and the dogs can not get in so she has plenty of privacy to eat and potty.

Feliway is also an idea. It's fairly pricey, but it could do the trick. One squirt per area she hangs around in should be good for the day. They also have wall plug ins that cost a little more, but I think the refills cost less in the long run.

I think it's supposed to have some sort of calming feline hormone in it. I can't quite remember, it's been a while since I looked into it. Was considering it for one of my cats.

Feliway does NOT work. I have 7 cats to prove that it doesn't. The crate thing is the only thing that worked with Grace.

I've read from a few people on LiveJournal that it works, but from what you say I'd leave it as a last resort then. Especially because of the price. Glad I never needed to bother with that.

peeing outside litter box

she needs to be checked by the vet. if she's peeing outside the box, there's a reason for it.

Cat's are disgusting. I don't understand, how any of you house them.

They can be trying, but disgusting? No.

Dog poop smells much worse than cat poop.

 You haven't played pool with me. That's where the litter box is, and when Manny drops a bomb, he clears the room. I have to cover his poops for him with the scooper (or just dump it in the trash, I leave one right near it). I've started keeping Febreeze in the room since I've been hanging out in there more. It's really bad.

My cat pees right outside the litter box. I'm talking an inch away from the litter box. She does this probably once a week and I'm convinced that she is doing it on purpose because she's mad when I leave to go to work. She is the needest, attention-craving cat ever! She's been doing this ever since we got her at 8 weeks (She is 18 months now). I have tried everything but I really think she knows she's suppose to go in the litter box, she is just plain spiteful. I give up......

I wouldn't put up with an animal destroying my house for one minute. They have a time limit on getting with the program, after that.... pfffft. My one boy cat that used to pee on everything got tossed outside and couldn't come back in. Weeks later, I finally let him back in the house and he never peed outside the box again.

Also, on that note (sort of), Gidget is no longer clawing things she's not allowed to, so she gets to live and keep her claws. :yay: AND she has grown out of wanting to make a mess with her water.

Once upon a time I had a kitty who farted. She would clear the room. :lmao:

Nothing like that since.

I've discovered that the new kitten, Nacho is the one making those random clouds of stink, not my dad, he's usually quick to confess. Picked him up this morning and heard him go "pfft!" Fortunately his tiny body couldn't stink up the other side of my room.
