Charging $ for Charging your EV. Guess why.

While county staff didn’t provide revenue projections, the new fees are expected to cover transaction fees charged by the station provider and the cost of electricity, which Hafeli noted has been climbing.

“Natural gas prices have really taken a jump, and they’re expected to continue rising,” she said. “So, we want to make sure the rates we set will be sufficient to cover those two key components.”

This is inevitable. All charge stations will eventually be pay-to-charge. There may be some exceptions. There is a charge depot at a police station which was specifically designed to attract high-end customers to the nearby retail stores. That's being paid for thru local funding.

Gotta love this new economy with all the fees involved. At least with my ICE vehicles, I am not paying a dwell-time fee (though that should be charged to some) or a membership fee. But these fees may be coming to a gas station near you once the station owners figure out that EV owners don't balk at paying these extra fees so why not charge them to ICE owners!

A $2 per hour “dwell-time fee” will be imposed if the vehicle remains connected to the station more than 10 minutes after it’s fully charged. Capped at $25 per session, the dwell-time fee is intended to discourage drivers from taking up a parking space when they don’t need the charging station, “freeing the space for other potential users,” according to a county staff report.

According to the staff report, the adopted charging fee is comparable to commercial providers. As of June, Electrify America was charging 43 cents per kWh for non-members and 31 cents per kWh, plus a monthly $4 fee for members in Fairfax County.

Loudoun County charges a flat fee of $2.10 per session at its stations, while Arlington County approved a fee of 14.5 cents per kWh on July 16 as an interim measure.

This should be done at the current gas stations like WaWa and Sheetz.

Electric cars will not become feasible until you can plug them in and get them charged in approximately the same amount of time it takes to fill a gas tank.

Which won't happen in the lifetime of anyone living today.

It's being worked on, but won't be ready for a while. And when it is deployed, it will increase all associated costs including the charging itself.

I'm putting up solar panels on the roof for mine. It may take a bit longer, but it's "free".

I can't see it that way.

To me, it's not free until the entire cost of the equipment, and cost of it's maintenance and associated work is recouped.

That can take decades.

It's free? What are the panels costing you? Are they free.?

Solar panels last about 25 years before losing their ability to work properly.
The inverters last 7 to 10 years before needing replacement .
They are not free even if the government pays for them , we are paying for them through our taxes.

Added to that... At this point, I doubt I'd even live long enough to break even.
I already have a solar charging system (2 actually), just have to increase my panel count. Right now you can get panels for about $.80/watt. But you're right, the panel cost vs the gas cost is still pretty wide.

Does no one see the elephant in the room - the great irony that EVs will require payment because the fossil fuel cost to make the electicity is rising?

Bingo! But on the bright side, the NGD/BBB/Inflation Creation bill will offer you tax credits on your EV that will not make a difference after the new taxes on oil/NG/coal are fully in place.

Would those EVs be the ones we can't purchase because the batteries are not made in the US?

It's been pointed out that those tax credits are unobtanium. A very few will actually qualify under the terms.
