Patrol officers locate suspect who stole cigarettes and assaulted a store clerk:
On March 18 at 6 p.m., a female suspect entered a convenience store in the 3600 block of Crain Highway in Waldorf. She walked behind the counter, grabbed several packs of cigarettes, and walked outside without paying. The clerk attempted to recover the stolen merchandise at which time the suspect punched her in the face, breaking the clerk’s eyeglasses. The suspect continued assaulting the clerk and then walked away. Officers canvassed the area and located the suspect near a commuter lot on Route 925. Shannon Nicole Smallwood, age 36, of Waldorf, was charged with assault, theft, destruction of property, and other related charges. On March 19, a judge ordered Smallwood to be held without bond at the Charles County Detention Center. Officer Huston made the apprehension.

Patrol officer recovers stolen car: on March 19, at 3:25 a.m., patrol officers were responding to the area of Wedgewood Place in Waldorf for the report of an iPhone notification of a crash. As officers approached the scene, an officer noticed a silver Hyundai with front end damage and the driver wearing a ski mask. When the driver observed the officer, he fled. The officer learned the vehicle had been reported stolen the previous day. The stolen car had damage to the front end and due to the damage, the vehicle was only able to get to speeds of 25 miles per hour. The driver eventually stopped on Smallwood Drive near Copley Avenue. The driver, age 17, from Capitol Heights, was arrested without incident and charged as a juvenile with theft and traffic violations in accordance with MD law. PFC Stine made the apprehension.

Patrol officers apprehend suspect armed with a handgun and making threats: On March 15 at 9:23 p.m., officers responded to a liquor store in the 4600 block of Indian Head Highway for the report of an armed individual flashing a handgun at patrons. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the suspect at the front door, and he immediately became confrontational. The suspect stated he had a gun and was going to pull it out. Officers were able to immediately secure the suspect’s arms and after a struggle, take him into custody. A loaded handgun was recovered. The suspect was placed inside a patrol vehicle where he continued to be disorderly by kicking the cage and headbutting the rear passenger window. Cato Alexander Johnson, III, age 21, of Washington, D.C., was charged with first-degree assault, resisting arrest, concealed handgun violation, and other related charges. On March 17, a judge ordered Johnson to be held without bond at the Charles County Detention Center. Officers Giroux, Moates, and Cpl. Micklus made the apprehension.

Student at Henry E. Lackey High School charged with possession of weapon on school grounds: On March 19, a knife fell out of a student’s pocket while inside a classroom at Henry E. Lackey High School. The knife was recovered, and the student was charged on a juvenile offense report with possession of a weapon on school grounds. The student also faces school disciplinary consequences in accordance with the Code of Student Conduct. PFC Barry is investigating.

Students at La Plata High School and Westlake High School charged with possession of cannabis: On March 19, a student at La Plata High School left a backpack on the school bus. The bus driver returned to the school to drop it off at which time a school administrator detected the odor of cannabis. Further investigation revealed the backpack contained a bag of cannabis. The student, age 18, was charged with possession of cannabis and faces school disciplinary consequences in accordance with the Code of Student Conduct.

On March 18, a student at Westlake High School was found to be in possession of cannabis. The cannabis was recovered, and the student will be charged on a civil citation with possession of cannabis. The student also faces consequences in accordance with the code of Student Conduct.
