On Thursday, May 7, 2020 at approximately 12:15 p.m.., deputies from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a residence on McMichael Drive in Lusby for a reported animal bite.

Preliminary investigation revealed a 5-year-old child was playing inside the residence, when the child was attacked by the family German Shepard. During the unprovoked attack, the child sustained severe traumatic injuries to the head, neck, and lower hip. The child was flown by Maryland State Police helicopter to Children’s Hospital in stable condition.

Further investigation revealed, a family member on scene witnessed the dog aggressively charge towards officers on scene and as a result the officers fired shots toward the animal in an effort to end the attack. The dog was pronounced deceased on scene.

This case remains under investigation.

The gardens in CRE is where the helicopter landed to pick up the kid. I was wondering what was going on.

happy to be living
Who would have thought to do that?
RareBreed said the heli landed near the gardens. Just clarifiying that there is an airport there. And as one that no longer lives on the airport but still keeps an airplane there and pays CRE dues, I remember when the airport manager and other folks (Including my husband, a pilot) met with the state police and designated the area for landing and set up protocols , etc.
You don't have to be a dick, black dog.

There is something more to this story that we do not know. German Shepherds are awesome.
JMO.
I agree about German Shepherds, great dogs. My wife's family has had a succession of them going back at least 60 years.

Latest is Angelica, who my brother-in-law adopted from a GSD Rescue back in February.

Though I can also say, the only dog that ever came after me was when I was about 10 and a neighbor's GSD charged me as I was walking by their house and grabbed me by the arm. Only a couple of minor bites, not much blood, needed no stitches.

Don't know the owners, but...

We'll see if they complain about the cops shooting their dog, while taking no responsibility for the injuries to their child.

When I was 6 or 7, the neighbors who lived behind my grandparents had a collie, looked just like Lassie. Their daughter and I were friends and we were always at one another's houses. The dog knew me, very well and never had a problem with it. One day, like hundreds before, I walked up the steps to their porch and the dog jumped up and bit me in the face. It wasn't bad, more like a nip than a bite. The owners were shocked, as were my grandparents, the dog had always been friendly. Never had another problem with him. Not sure what I did to cause that, maybe startled him while he was sleeping, not sure. Any dog is capable of biting...they have teeth! Feel so bad for that family, pray the child will be alright.

I did that as a kid to our Cocker Spaniel and got bit in the cheek. He was also blind and deaf. Youngest did it to our Malamute and got bit in the cheek as well. Both dogs immediately felt bad for what they did so it clearly was an accident.

Out of character for a GSD to attack a weak member of his 'flock'.

They do show up pretty high in the dogbite statistics, but that's mostly involving strangers and may be in part related to how people consider them 'guard dogs' and some owners just keep them on their property with little training and discipline.

WTF...... You don't make the top 10 club by not biting.. Do you have any data that says its mostly strangers or a weak flock member? Because I ain't buying it....

When I was ten a friend had a German Shepherd that was on the bad list for aggression. We were playing catch in the front yard and the dog was playing too, running back and forth between us. He jumped up on me and came down with one paw on my side. I needed three stitches to close the wound from a very sharp toe nail. I volunteered to appear at his hearing because the state wanted to put him down. Told the entire story of what happened and then listened to his history. It seems he tore the crap out of two people who broke into my friends house and a bleeding heart liberal got all bent out of shape about it. Being a stupid kid I thought one of the dogs jobs was to protect hist family, but the criminals evidently had more rights than the dog. Anyway, the panel that listened to his case actually had functioning brains and didn't punish him for scratching me while playing. In fact, they removed the flag on his file and said he never should have been in trouble in the first place.
That's a long note to comment that a history of aggression can be a smoke screen for people complaining when a good dog does his job.
I hope the child heals completely and isn't discouraged about owning a dog of his own.
