Childrens leg cramps

My granddaughter was getting severe leg cramps at night. She would wake up and scream and cry that her legs were hurting. If you rubbed them she would calm down. Now she seems to be getting them in the middle of the afternoon. My son said the other day she just started screaming and crying and went to the floor saying her legs hurt. Any ideas???? They are going to talk to the doctor about it but I thought if anyone else had this problem with their kids they might be able to give some insight on what the poblem might be

She's probably dehydrated, load her up on bananas and water :yay:

My brother had terrible leg cramps when he was younger. I'm pretty sure it was "growing pains". I had them too but it didn't seem like mine were as bad as his. My parents used to elevate our legs, which is what the doctor said to do, to help with circulation but other than that I'm not sure what else you could do. I remember the summer he complained about them the worst...he grew almost an entire foot! He's now getting ready to be 24 and he's 6'2".

Good luck :howdy:

If it is indeed, dehydration and/or potassium defficiency, try giving her some pedialyte while you massage the cramps in he legs.

Growing pains can be attributed to diet, make sure she's getting enough calcium and protein as well as a multi-vitamin. :yay:

Okay. This happened to my son two years ago (he was 9 years old) He had an episode that was so terrifying (you would have thought he was dying) and he was taken to the ER.

"Growing Pains" were diagnosed after extensive testing.

I was worried about bone cancer, etc...

Has your son spoken to her pediatrician about it?

I have always had leg/foot cramps, but to a child it can be excruciating.

My son had "growing pains" when he was younger but never to the point of screaming in pain. He would just tell me his legs hurt, now he's 23 and 6"+.
I thought about the potassium thing too and she likes bananas so I'll tell my son about that. Thanks

I agree it could be either dehydration or "growing pains". I went through the growing pains with my son. He is now over 6' 2" and still growing at nearly 19 y/o. During one period he would cry every day how bad he legs hurt. We did all the tests only to find out he was in the middle of a growth spert.

They had her at the emergency room last night for something different - viral infection, temp 104. They said she wasn't dehydrated and sent her home. She has a doctors appointment tomorrow as a follow up and they are going to talk to the doctors then about the leg cramps.

Go today!!! Most Dr.s will fit you right in. What if the viral infection and the leg cramps are related?

Seriously! My son (6 at the time) couldn't even walk into the hospital, it was so scary! We were in Florida at the time and had to sit through a ceremony outside--I guess the humid weather was too much for him. It's terrifying when you don't know what is wrong with your babies! I think he may have had a mild virus, because he had never gotten sick like that before.

It sounds like a "Charlie's Horse" kind of cramps. She will need to eat some banana, drink some water, take some iron, and when she feel the cramps coming on, have her point her toe up in the air with the heel push out down straighing the leg out. That will stops the cramps.

I used to get "Charlie's Horse" cramps all the time during both of my pregnancies and I was low on iron throughout my pregnancies.

Have the doctor check her iron level to see if it is low and that she might need extra help from doctor to control her iron level.

I am still taking iron supplement because I am constantly low on iron level. Before I took some iron supplement, I used to be very tired all the time. Low iron can make you feel very "fatigue".

My nephew, he will be 4 this year, has been suffering with "growing pains" in his legs for the last year. They have had quite a few tests done at the doctors and this is all they have come back with. He does wake up in the middle of the night and sometimes in the afternoon complaining of horrible cramping. We would rub his legs and give him some tylenol to ease the pain...per the doctors direction. They say there is nothing that you can really do but wait until it passes. In know this probably isn't much help but at least you know she is not alone!

Hydrating and potassium are important. :yay:

In my older years, when I get an occasional cramp (they make me hop around and I try to only whimper) I get up and take a tablespoon of vinegar. It works.
