Childrens leg cramps

I had leg cramps growing up and I remember the pain to this day. They ran every test in the book on me....nothing....my mom tried bananas and water...it did nothing to stop the pain. She would rub them, give me baby aspirin and a heating pad. The harder I played and ran, the more they would hurt at night. It does not feel like a charlie horse, it feels like the muscles have been over worked like you would do in a gym.....

I finally outgrew it......

My granddaughter was getting severe leg cramps at night. She would wake up and scream and cry that her legs were hurting. If you rubbed them she would calm down. Now she seems to be getting them in the middle of the afternoon. My son said the other day she just started screaming and crying and went to the floor saying her legs hurt. Any ideas???? They are going to talk to the doctor about it but I thought if anyone else had this problem with their kids they might be able to give some insight on what the poblem might be

Did we ever get a diagnosis? How's she feeling?

Celie got terrible cramps due to her RTA. Wasn't until her co2 got right to bring all her levels to normal that they quit. The potassium is affected in certain types of RTA.

I know your gonna think I am crazy because I thought my dad was crazy.

Through my teen years till now and even worse when I was prego, I would get leg cramps (Charlie horses) so bad that the muscle actually stuck out from the leg. I would wake up in the middle of them night in pain and my dad would find me on the side of the road crying because the pain was so bad I couldn't drive. He told me to always carry salt packs with me, yes it's nasty and most don't like it but it works almost immediatly. Take salt pour in hand and eat it. I have also had to do this with my son who seems he is going to have them too. He hesitated with the salt the first time I told him to do it, but now that he knows it works he does it with no problems..

It sounds like a "Charlie's Horse" kind of cramps. She will need to eat some banana, drink some water, take some iron, and when she feel the cramps coming on, have her point her toe up in the air with the heel push out down straighing the leg out. That will stops the cramps.

I used to get "Charlie's Horse" cramps all the time during both of my pregnancies and I was low on iron throughout my pregnancies.

Have the doctor check her iron level to see if it is low and that she might need extra help from doctor to control her iron level.

I am still taking iron supplement because I am constantly low on iron level. Before I took some iron supplement, I used to be very tired all the time. Low iron can make you feel very "fatigue".

Please be very careful with taking iron, especially children. Only take it if your Dr. suggests. The only saftey cap on my multi vitamins are the ones with iron.

I agree with the dehydration (actually most Americans are dehydrated most of the time) and potassium. But stretching the muscles out a few times a day on an inclined board helps greatly. After a jog I stand on a 45 degree incline up against the wall and pull my waist to the wall and can feel the burn from this and after about 30 seconds I am loose and I know I will not get cramps that night.
