...what was customary in the US, but, 11, plenty of girls are having their period and developing by then. To me, it is messed up, a child and an adult but it is their culture and it is, happily, no longer ours.

I thought this was worth noting when she was asked what she felt;

My Grandfater was 18 when he married my 14 yr old Grandmother. Not all that uncommon in the late 20's or early 30's. But these arranged marriages for a 40 year old to an 11 year old. That is a big difference to me.

...to me as well. I'm glad the US has decided children shouldn't be marrying, especially to old men.

I guess I just mean to say what do we expect? Afghanistan IS a stone age place. It's yet one more of the reasons we're supposed to be careful exerting our power over seas. What, exactly, are we going to bring to a culture that is 1,000's of years old for all intents and purposes? You can lead a horse to water...

When we went to visit the grave of Stonewall Jackson's left arm this summer, It was buried on the plantation of a guy that married his deceased wife's 16 yr old neice when he was in his 80's.

.... and she was a hottie :hot:
Most of the folks you see in civil war era pics look like extras from Dueling Banjos, but this girl could have been a model today.

So I guess we shouldn't consider it wrong that some of these same people will stone a daughter to death for losing her virginity before marriage because she shamed the family?

It is one thing to have a different culture, it is another thing to live like barbarians from 2500 years ago.

How is that any different from someone killing another person for being gay, getting an abortion, etc.?

We can think it's weird...but it's their culture. :shrug: I don't agree with it, but I'm not going to say their ignorant morons because of it. Just because people live differently doesn't mean it's wrong. :shrug: I'm sure there are tons of people living in other cultures who are very happy with their culture and wouldn't want to change things.

The difference is 99% of the people in our culture would agree that killing someone just because they are gay or whatever is wrong.

In parts of the Middle East these kind of practices of "honor killings" are very widely accepted. If anything I would think a woman would agree with this considering the way woman are treated in some parts of the ME.

Oh, I'm not saying I agree with it! I'm just saying it's another culture, and that's what they believe. :shrug: I'll just make sure to never move there. :yay:

And I'm saying as a human, forgetting about culture, race or religion it is wrong!

If they had people who did any thinking over the past couple thousand years they would of realized this too and been done with these ways of thinking but it is about what you would expect from a people whose religion "the ROP" is ok with certain kiilings.
