Church Attire

Isaiah 55:8-9
One Sunday morning an old cowboy entered a church just before services
were
to begin. Although the old man and his clothes were spotlessly clean, he
wore jeans, a denim shirt and boots that were very worn and ragged. In his
hand he carried a worn out old hat and an equally worn out Bible.

The church he entered was in a very upscale and exclusive part of the
city.
It was the largest and most beautiful church the old cowboy had ever seen.
The people of the congregation were all dressed with expensive clothes and
accessories.
As the cowboy took a seat, the others moved away from him. No one greeted,
spoke to, or welcomed him. They were all appalled at his appearance and
did
not attempt to hide it.

As the old cowboy was leaving the church, the preacher approached him and
asked the cowboy to do him a favor. "Before you come back in here again,
have a talk with God and ask him what he thinks would be appropriate
attire
for worship." The old cowboy assured the preacher he would.

The next Sunday, he showed back up for the services wearing the same
ragged
jeans, shirt, boots, and hat. Once again he was completely shunned and
ignored. The preacher approached the man and said, "I thought I asked you
to
speak to God before you came back to our church."

"I did," replied the old cowboy.

"If you spoke to God, what did he tell you the proper attire should be for
worshiping in here?" asked the preacher.

"Well, sir, God told me that He didn't have a clue what I should wear. He
said He'd never been in this church."

In My Opinion
Thats great.

Having been a member of a church for a short time that ended up with that same attitude, I can seriously see it happening.

church Im talking about the Lutheran Church in Bowie on 197, asked the organist and his wife to leave the church because they admitted that they had not found Jesus Christ yet.

so instead of keeping them in the church and praying that they would find Jesus Christ, the hypocritical bastards decided it was best for them not to continue with the music.

he played wonderfully, and she sang equally as well.

I stopped going to that church when they did that.

Im pretty sure that God has not visited that church in many years either.

I loved this....I've seen some examples of this behavior in my church as well, and being the compassionate woman I am, I stepped in to defend the person who was being berated. I don't think God cares what we wear to church, and maybe the person was not as fortunate as others who doll up for the Service. The fact that he was there speaks volumnes about his character.

While preparing your soul for God is what matters, I'm not sure I totally agree that God does not care what we wear. If the "cowboy" of the OP was wearing his best, (and his conscience was clear) I do not doubt that God was throroughly pleased with him. If his conscience was clear, but he was too lazy to bother getting dressed up, I imagine God is well pleased, but also that it would be God's will that this "cowboy", in the course of his growth in holiness, would come to recognize that while God is his Father, God is also Creator and he is created. IMHO, we should be approaching God with a balance of confidence in His love, as well as fear and trembling.
We do not give slop to those we love most; we do our very best for them in all things.

i love a man's forearms
I also belive that God does not care what you look like or wear. God does not love the women dressed to the nines any more than he loves the one in blue jeans and a t-shirt (which would be me).

I am so very blessed
God doesn't read GQ.

I'm sure he doesn't care if you wear Prada and carry a Gucci bag, or wear holy Levi's and wear 6 year old Nikes.

me too, the church we go to everyone is wearing jeans. Some of the elders are a little more dressed.

But I like being comfortable when I hear God's word

Similar Story:

A homeless man wearing dusty old clothes began to enter the doorway of a local church that he had been ignoring throughout the years. As he walked behind several groups of well dressed church-goers he was suddenly stopped at the door by an usher. "Sorry, but you cannot come to church looking like that," proclaimed the usher. "You'll need to go home, take a shower, shave, put on some clean clothes and then you can join the rest of us here in church."

The homeless man turned around as others rushed passed him and into the church and he began to slowly walk down the stairs. When he reached the street, he mumbled these words: "God, if that's what it takes, I could never be welcome in your house. I'm poor, I don't have a home and the clothes I'm wearing are all I have."

At that moment, the man heard someone say, "My son, when they turned you away, they turned Me away."

Moral of the story: Don't go to church to find God; go to God to find Him.

And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. (Jeremiah 29:13)

This is one of the reasons that I do not believe in *organized* religion....too many hypocritical people that judge and think they are better than their neighbor.......this was not the intention of a church. But alot of the churches have turned into political money hungry machines.

We live in Mechanicsville. Does anyone know which churches in the area would accept those who live in jeans everyday and feel the most comfortable in them? We're open to any denomination.

South Point is a non-denominational church meeting in Leonardtown High School. Great music, biblical teaching, friendly members, and come as you are dress code. :howdy:

How fitting is "Today's Truth"

Today's Truth
"The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward
appearance but the LORDlooks at the heart." 1 Samuel 16:7 NIV

I would appeal to modest dress, whatever the code. Nothing more distracting that to have some woman with an extremely low cut blouse that has all but her boobs hanging out waltzing into church. Hard...to...concentrate...must....stop...looking...ahhhh! Ladies, if you think guys ain't gonna look, think again.

Amen to that brother. Same thing when you bow your head to pray then end up staring at some young girls behind with low waist pants showing the other cleavage they have.

The pastor should have took one look at the Bible and should have remained silent.

One the other hand, we should be offering God our best we have to offer. When you have better clothes than jeans, you should put them on. Going to church isnt about us, and what we want, and what we need, and what we like. The center of our faith shouldnt be us, its to be God.
Its all about God!

"You know you have a healthy church when folks leave and ask God if he liked the service!" (Johnny Mac)

If our thoughts are on how very little we can do, and get away with it than its time to examine yourself.
If you were going out on a date you would try to look your best, Why does God deserve any less?

(1 Sam 16:7 KJV) But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

What message are you sending others when you go in shorts sandalls and a T Shirt and look like you just woke up on a beach somewhere?

So what message are you sending?
