Chanhassen Dinner Theatres drops Cinderella over diversity concerns
Chanhassen Dinner Theatres jettisoned plans to stage "Cinderella" because its cast was too white, the Pioneer Press reports.
The dinner theater announced the news on Monday, citing its commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. Cinderella's planned cast was "98 percent white," a number the company determined didn't reflect its DEI efforts, Artistic Director Michael Brindisi told the Pioneer Press.
Brindisi considered recasting Cinderella, but finally elected to "scrap this and start fresh with a clean slate," he told the Pioneer Press. The company now plans to stage "Footloose" at some point in 2022.
Chanhassen said it's bolstered its DEI efforts since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody. It announced in February the hiring of DEI consultant Kelli Foster Warder, who has worked to assess the company's operations, and the creation of a DEI committee.
