Climber found on Mt Hood

Not to point anyone out here, but I think its a little crazy how everyone thinks this is such a shocking tragedy. These guys tried to climb a dangerous mountain during the most dangerous time of the year. They knew the risks before they set foot on that mountain. I applaud them for doing things that they enjoyed, but these types of occurences are not unforseeable, and in fact, it is the act of staring down death that drives these personality types to do what they do.

It amazes me how much media attention this is all getting. Climbers get into a pickle on a mountain somewhere around the world on a daily basis. There is a reason that they are unable to obtain life insurance.

I completely agree. Over the weekend foxnews had an interview with a climber who had previously been in the same situation on the same mountain. He stated that the climbers, or their estates, should be expected to cover the costs of the search/recovery efforts.

I didn't say it was a shocking tradgedy. just a tragedy for the families and the people who knew them. Any loss of life is a tradedy for someone. At least its local knews and not how Paris Hilton is knocking the bottom out of Britney Spears. Who cares about them. Stories like these climbers unite people in prayer and hope. Its things like this that make the world a better place.

I just wish people would quit finding fault in everything from mountain climbers to Santa and Disney world. No matter how well you dress it up, someone is out there putting their own twist to it. The Redskins won yesterday, maybe they were all on steroids for the game. News at 11!

It is a tragedy, and its terrible that people have to die like this. I am sure the other two will most likely be found dead as well :(

The only thing thats tragic would be if these guys didn't fully inform their loved ones of the risks that they were undertaking. Otherwise, the families should be fully aware that their loved ones were toying with death. I enjoy the outdoors and exploring the backcountry, and every time I leave the parking lot for a trailhead, I'm willing to accept the consequences while trying to be prepared for all circumstances. We don't need people to be united in "prayer and hope", we need people to realize the consequences of their actions. I'm sure these guys (as experienced as they were) knew what they were getting into. I'm certain they didn't expect to die on the mountain, but they all knew it was a possibility. If they knew that people were saying how tragic it was that they died (doing something that they loved), they'd probably be pissed.

Conversely, if the other 2 are found alive, the media will say it's a miracle. Which will be just as silly, because their survival will have been directly related to (as few as one or two) specific decisions that they made during the course of their 10 days up there.

The REAL story is the incredable tenacity of the Search and Rescue folks! They’re the ones risking life and limb in terrible conditions to try to save these boneheads. As a former Navy helo rescue swimmer, I admit I’m a bit partial, but these climbers put themselves in that position. I hope no one else is injured trying to find them.
JMHO,

After reading your posts I can see why your forum name is what it is. Glad there are better people on these forums to go back and forth on these with.
I hope and pray for their families as I am sure other forumites are doing the same. I am sure there are folks out there that really care about what happens in our country.

Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Actually, I totally agree with him.

There has been countless energy, hours and money spent looking for these jackalopes for over a week, when THEY put themselves in that situation on the mountain. As risk-takers, they made a horrible choice to go out in wintery, snowy conditions, and their selfishness has put hundreds of searchers and rescuers at risk to lok for their sorry butts. They don't have my sympathy.

Their families, on the other hand, must feel awful that their loves ones had such little regard for them that they put their sense of adventure over their safety. :ohwell:

Thank goodness I'm not the only one who feels this way.

The very same people who believe our men and women should not be put in danger overseas, also believe that they SHOULD be put in danger to look for mountain climbers who should never have been there in the first place!

You all know what is going to follow now......

At their funeral service everyone will say "At least they died doing something that they loved", and heralded for their sense of adventure.

I see nothing noble in that.

I see this situation as something really tragic for their families and friends.....they these guys thought so little of the people near and dear to them that they put common sense aside.

They should have loved their families a little more and stayed the hell home.

I'm afraid so. If they were alive and well they would have just come out of their hiding place yesterday and started walking down the mountain. Weather was clear and the entire mountain was surrounded by choppers that had 10 mile+ visibility.

Merry Christmas to you, too.

I think you should learn some more about the psychology and behavior of adventurers, explorers, climbers, etc. In some ways, they are a different breed than the average man because they dare to do the impossible. They do things that the average man would never even fathom, and if they did fathom it, they would never know the strength, skill, planning, tenacity, and balls that it takes to do such things. The fact that they occasionally fail, and that that failure costs them their lives should not be a surprise. Some think it's crazy to try such difficult feats and that they are doing senseless things, but in reality they are pushing the envelope of what is possible for all people. It's us who has to realize that they are willing to accept their fate.

After all, why climb a mountain?
