The job was a HUGE step up for his income and that was the point. In that he was certainly a rarity.
I just found a reference claiming their net worth at that time was about 700k, not counting a house (since they didn't technically have one). Kind of a lot of money in Arkansas. And a small salary for an Arkansas governor is kind of like when Brezhnev claimed to have a small salary - when all your expenses are already paid for, a salary is kind of a joke.
This is still a minor tangent on the major contention - men who run for President don't need to do it for the money. Wealthy men run for president.
