This ought to be good.

They said the same thing about Rock & Roll in the 50's... :coffee:

I can't talk about hip-hop without sounding like a crochety old man. First, I'm a huge fan of classic R&B - Motown, Stax, Philly. Whenever I feel the thud of a subwoofer from someone else's car when I'm stopped at a light, I long to hear a bass with groove like James Jamerson. Second, my idea of good hip-hip was always artists like Public Enemy and KRS-One, artists who spoke their mind about social and political issues instead of bragging about their bling and their hoes. The Public Enemy/Anthrax tour in the early '90s was great.

Whenever I hear rap, I hear killing for money, sex, and songs that go too in-depth into sex.

And MTV banned Vanessa Carlton for a sexually suggestive song - well those hypocrits obviously don't watch their own network...

Same for me. :lmao: I can respect much of R&B, blues and Motown; that is real music. Even a lot of the early rap was entertaining because it was fun, and they may have had a valid social argument to express as well. But that eventually evolved into the booty-shaking, greed-glorifying, violence-wallowing disgrace we see today.

Hip-hop exemplifies many of the problems we currently have in America.

The style rarely offers solutions, but is glad to place the blame on various people. So not only does it romanticize current problems, it encourages them to propagate.

Rap does take skill and could be a valid form of expression... if it were to be leveled and reconstructed with some semblance of respect and intelligent insight.

At least you can understand what they are saying. Its just noise to me. Of course I have never listened too hard.

Freedom of speech.... Its a very powerful thing. I think the music has its good points and bad. However its just music. Its just 1 type of music. Rock music can be considered sexually suggestive in some songs i've heard. They have some violent themes to that. Even country music, you know, being about cheating on husbands, shooting people and whatnot... still doesn't make it any better. Music from the 70's was about drugs. Marilyn Manson was the worst thing until Eminem came along. 10 years from now? who know's....

The idea of censorship makes me want to vomit. If I wan't to hear about thug-life, gansta-bangin' bling-blinging and slappin my ho's I should have the right to do so.

However, I ain't letting my kids listen to that crap.

Unfortunately not everyone feels the need to pay attention and/or regulate the kind of music their kids listen to.

But I don't think that censoring or banning any kind of music is the answer.

What am I - as a 30-something adult - supposed to do if I want to listen about taking an assault rifle to a bunch of redneck cops that seriously deserve it?

I definately agree... Censorship is bad. In this country its not that we have full freedom of speech. Howard Stern even got fed up and went to satallite radio where the FCC can't touch him. In Australia you can say the F word on the radio. Thats true freedom of speech. In this country, you will get fined, and kicked off the air.

Nobody will ever ban the music. Eminem and Marilyn Manson along with Elvis made their point along with 2 live crew and any other artist that was censored because of his/her suggestive/violent lyrics etc.

I think that if I want to listen to Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, etc, then thats my right to hear about the thug life. If I want to listen to Garth Brooks, or whoever, thats my right too.

To prove my case and point, put Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and Eminem on the radio and run the show against one done up by Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi, you see who gets higher ratings

I don't approve of censorship at all... I just think rappers need to excersize more moral responsibility knowing teenagers idolize them.

And the NFL and NBC need to start kicking out players who are arrested for violent crimes (aka half the Cincinatti Bengals).

...... :killingme :killingme :killingme

Like any of that will happen...

Well, if they want to - fine, if not... oh well. It is my responibility to keep my teenagers from idolizing murderous thugs or even if they idolize them, I will prevent them from emulating them. But hopefully by the time they get around to that age, I will have instilled enough sense in their heads that they know to direct their love and admiration to people who are far more deserving of their respect.

Right; you can not control the media or rap stars, but you can control - to a reasonable extent - your children.

If the rapper's parents had raised him (general use) correctly he would probably be doing something at least partially productive for society.

If the kids' parents would raise them better there would not be an audience to sing to.

But now that we have seen this downward spiral initiated... we must ponder how much worse the situation will become.

Speaking of controlling the media - did anyone see Kelly Clarkson's almost wardrobe malfunction :jet:

It was waiting to happen!
