It's laughable that some people believe teachers aren't working. In fact, many of the teachers are frantically trying to figure out how to overhaul lesson plans to allow for an online format. Even better, most are handcuffed on what they can do waiting some higher up administration to covey information down to them. Many teachers were conducting online classes via their own schedule (largely optional given all the variables) but the County instructed them not to. My guess, it was because of ongoing agreements in place with certain online formats and no agreements with the various web meeting programs (zoom, etc.). There is now very limited "face time" between students and teachers. This is largely problematic for the younger kids (K-3) who tend to have a special bond with their teachers.
This is all uncharted territory and it's unreasonable to expect a fully detailed plan was in place or that the rolled out version will be perfect. This will be tweaked as it continues. I can't imagine they will agree to redoing the school year as more than majority was completed without issue. This would also create ripple effects down the line. Assuming this school year is canned (IE - no school through June), you may see an attempt to conduct summer school (has it's own hurdles of course). You may also see an early start to the 2020-21 school year with an accelerated attempt to close out this current year and then roll into an accelerated next year. IE - 8-9 hour school days for a few months to complete THIS missed year and then 8-9 hour school days to condense the NEXT year - targeting a normal (or close to normal) year end to the 2020-21 school year. Also, consider Saturday's may be in play. They may look to eliminate non-core classes (perhaps PE, art, music, etc.). Upsetting to some I am sure (not me).
If they do go to summer school, I would bet you would see some level of agreement allowing kids to miss up to 1-week excused for family vacation. This is valuable time to both kids and parents. It will also be necessary for someone at the State level to allow as it will severely hinder an already damaged tourism industry (think Ocean City) if kids/parents can't break free for some time. This is going to be interesting.
