Composite Decking

I've been reading lots about composite decking material and I'm seeing different recommendations on spacing the boards. Mfg's mostly say 1/4"; some users have said 1/4" is not enough, some say too much. Looking for some feedback from those who have used this material and their results.

Let me first say that I have no idea about construction of any type. Composite is that fake wook stuff? My front porch and back deck are both that stuff and the planks are all right next to each other. Maybe a 1/4" apart if even that much. House is 2 years old and the porch and deck look fantastic. The real wood trim around the door already looks old and needs to be repainted.

The guys that did my deck used a 16 penny nail, that's about a little less than a 1/4 inch.

That's what I heard anyway.....

If you want to see real life application of composite the boardwalk in North Beach was done in it 2 years ago. Still looks brand new even if it gets full sun much of the day.

The boardwalk in Solomons is composite also. Looks great. Some of the newer stuff is tounge and groove so spacing is pretty much preset.

The deck on our house is composite with a hidden fastener system, no visible screw heads and the fasteners act as your spacers too.

¼" is ideal. Slightly smaller will look good. The boardwalk at Solomons is a nice job but near the gazeebo/pavillion or whatever it is, the boards are butted and warped.

If so the County needs to contact the installer/manufacturer. The beauty of composiet is that it doesn't warp, splinter or check.
