Computer Setup for Pre-Schooler

3 and 4-year-olds are starting to use computers in pre-k. They are better with the "double clicking," "dragging," and other mouse movements than you might think.... it's almost intuitive to them.

He's having a hard time with the whole double-clicking thing, which is why I was looking for a pre-made portal to access games and stuff on the desktop. I suppose I could always knuckle down and *write* one, but I'd rather not.

Yesterday when I tried to show him how to double-click, he lapsed into the whole smacking the mouse and wildly moving the mouse about, hitting the button as often as he could - the kind of thing he often does when he's frsutrated but still in a good mood.

But I was very surprised that he could maneuver a mouse and click once without any problem, because he still has difficulty drawing anything as complex as a letter of the alphabet (except maybe "O"), and his observational skills are sometimes superb but often terrible. For example, if I ask him to count the animals in a picture, he will find tiny ones in the distance or hidden that I never saw - but he can't seem to notice something I am directly pointing to. So it surprised me to see that he could connect the movement of a mouse with his hand motion.

It's exciting to me, actually, because it encourages him to do something that will improve his fine motor skills, and he is eager to do it.
