Plug back into power strip
ReBoot
Bring up a web page.
Freezes on page or goes to black screen (varies from one try to another)
Then alarm starts to goe off (it is a slow high pitched beep)

Leave it off for a couple minutes. The internal temperature could be exceeding the limit set.

Was thinking the same. I put a little oscillating fan next to the Air Conditioning vent to move some of the cooler air toward my computers in the summertime.

It was shut off over night.

Do you think the cooling fan is shot?

Have you taken your tower apart to take a look at the cooling fan to see if it need some cleaning?

My CPU tower died due to cooling fan and it cost $50 to replaced the cooling fan. However, even with the cooling fan replaced, the CPU is fried. It's no good no more.

It's worth checking. If it's cool in the house then you can always unplug it and haul it outside. Plug it in and turn it on. If all the fans don;t kick on after a little while then yes you might have issues.

No wonder why my computer died because I can't hear the "alarms" and "beeping" going off.

They don't do it unless there are problems. Usually the PC will act up before it just ups and dies.

My CPU won't boot. It kept showing the screen "Check your cooling fan". I tried F4 and some others to see if I can go into where you can fix or put your computer on "safe" as you are trying to fix it. It won't go in no matters what I tried to do. CPU died and we even tried replacing the cooling fan, the CPU is fried.

Clevalley can vouch for me on this.

Here's my thread: http://forums.somd.com/computers-technology-internet/144005-cooling-fan.html

River, depending on the computer manufacturer, the beeps may be indicating an error code. Dell could be different from HP different from Gateway. Here is a link that explains some beep codes and what they mean, again if you look up your specific manufacturer they could have different meanings. Have to listen to the beep e.g.a long one followed by 2 short ones that keep repeating If it's beeping totally randomly unsure

How often do you take the cover off you PC and clean ...dust the inside...???
Not kidding...
all that dust gunkes up fans and increases temp inside PC...
take access panel off...use paint brush and clean PC...

If heat is issue...clean PC and run with side panel off and see if that helps...

Thanks.

It is an Emachine
Assuming it is IBM POST it doesn't list long beep but this is a start

If it's not overheating, could it be the start of a hard drive failure?

Not generally. Usually when the HDD dies it just won't see the drive or you can hear the arm knocking inside the drive. Also, the PC won't boot if the platters can't be read from or written to.
