Considering a Mac, Need help

So help me, I'm so tired of crashing computers that I am seriously considering a Mac. I hear that they don't crash as much, but need some info about them. I have even been considering going back to a DOS system, how sad is that!

I don't even know what to look for, I need baby steps here.
Thank you!

Get as much computer as you can afford or are willing to spend. I have no complaints after 2 years with my G5.

If you want any serious advice you have to tell us what you actually plan to do with the machine?

MAC's take some getting used to, but once you do, you tend to be a loyal fan...

BTW, most versions of Linux these days can be taken for a "test drive" by using a bootable CD. It runs a little slower since it's off of the CD, but it lets you see if it will find all your hardware and if you like the operating system.

I know you don't want to hear this, but in reality MAC OSX is cheaper than supported versions of Linux. How much is a copy of Red Hat Linux or other top brand with a support arrangement?

I just bought five copies of MAC OSX Leopard (family pack) for $180...

If you're not highly computer savvy, then Linux is pretty much still the domain for highly competent nerds...

Ubuntu was free. I've had no problems with it and I am not that computer savvy.

Like I said, you can try it for free too. If you like it, that's a whole lot better that dropping a few grand for a Mac.

I think a MAC mini with an Intel core 2 duo processor is like $599 or so...

Sure if you want a high end 30" monitor too, you can run the price up there, but you can certainly get in a MAC much cheaper than that...

Free vs $600 ... Free vs $600 ... Free vs $600 ... Free vs $600 ... Free vs $600

Makes sense to me to drop $600 when I could try something else for free :sarcasm:

Yeah well, she can ride over to Annapolis Mall and test drive MAC's all day long for free too...

And if she doesn't like them, she can buy some frilly undies at Victoria's so it wasn't a wasted trip...

You're ignoring the hardware cost. The "$600" includes latest and greatest hardware (for that form factor). The "free" assumes you have a decent hardware platform to run it on. People who are considering running Unbuntu are probably going to use a piece of hardware that they have lying around, not their brand new primary PC. Yes, the OS is free, and there's lots of good software for it, but most folks just aren't savy enough to install and use it.

Yeah, and then if she likes it, $600.

Or she could download Ubuntu right now in the convenience of her home

If she happens to like Linux...still free

Considering the original post, it's safe to assume that she has hardware. And again, I had no problem installing it. Install is pretty self-explanatory. No need to be computer savvy.

I think the point that you are missing is most people don't want anything to do with being computer savvy...

If you told my wife she needs to download Unbuntu, burn it to a CD, and then boot her computer with it, she would respond with: :yikes: HUH?

She doesn't care how free that free is, she just wants an easy button...

:killingme

Well, I guess if Sheila is that computer illiterate, maybe she should just go buy the Mac. And good luck getting stuff to work on it :yay:

(despite what the commercials say, there are tons of products that don't work on a Mac)

I'll be devils advocate here and ask why her PC keeps crashing?

I've been using windows PCs both premade and made myself and have had maybe one or two BSoDs in 15 years. Also, one faulty HD, but that isn't the fault of the OS.
