Constellation skips regulatory hearing
BALTIMORE (AP) - Constellation Energy (NYSE:CEG) executives frustrated Maryland regulators Wednesday by skipping a hearing to discuss costs passed on to consumers due to deregulation, highlighting a standoff between the state and the utility over rising energy costs.

Constellation skips regulatory hearing

Gov. O'Malley issued this statement this morning:

"If Constellation is suing ratepayers for an additional $386 million, it seems only fair that they would appear before the Public Service Commission to explain why. We will support the Public Service Commission in its efforts to obtain answers to the very serious questions that have been raised about ratepayer liability for stranded costs and decommissioning expenses."

My only thought is that these are the guy who operate 2 nuclear reactors in Calvert County and want to build a third. Is this the kind of company we want operating such a dangerous facility in an area whose main escape route is an aging 2-lane span which likely won't be replaced for another 10 years?

Maybe it's because the power that Calvert Cliffs produces is used in the "Eastern Corridor" (Virginia to Maine) and if you haven't noticed- population growth in the area has exploded. Yes, even with the market slow down- people still live here. The amount of power currently produced for this corridor does is not adequate and cannot continue to support the current population and the McMansions people like to build. All you have to do is drive north on 4 to see a typical new home in Calvert being over 3000 square feet.

And before you can say that they can build elsewhere- remember Constellation is the number 1 employer in Calvert County. Not to mention they give quite a bit to the community. I've never heard anyone complain about bringing in new jobs.

Do I agree with the new reactor? I'm on the fence, and no, i don't work for them. But I do have to respect *why* we need adequate facilities to support our energy gobbling needs.

Weren't all of those discussions held ad naseum last year? With O'Malley's folks trying to change the rules of the game at every turn?

Isn't Route 4 a four lane road? And, 235?

What makes nuclear power so dangerous? Do you know anything about nuclear power?

Please make at least one accurate accusation before posting such idiotic posts.

The state of Maryland needs too force Constellation to fill unit 1 at CCNPP with concrete and shut down that ageing reactor before allowing them to build a unit 3.:pete:

Do you have a reason you believe this should happen? Some inside knowledge?

He claims the containment structure was not built for the reactor to be in place this long, go back and read the thread he started last week. He has an agenda against nuclear power..........

I don't have any agendas against nucler power if it is new. But I do have great love and concern for the people of this state. If you sent your loveone on a trip and if you had a thirty year old car would you trust it to drive your loveones cross country?

If it was in good shape, yes.

Where do you find it, because I have looked, that says that the containment stuctures will only last 20-30 years(under operation) or whatever you claim?

I have talked to people that worked on the orginal project and they live here with there families still and I haven't heard any of this fear of the structure's intergrity to be compromised.

You brought up TMI in the last thread but I don't understand why, the containment structures did their job just as the ones at CCNPP would do.

What is your specific concern? Perhaps I can help you understand where you're wrong.

And were they REQUIRED to attend the hearing? No. My first question would be WHY if it was so important.

The PSC didn't order Constellation to attend, because the company is not a regulated entity in Maryland, PSC Chairman Steven Larsen said.

And just how "dangerous" is this facility? I've seen a lot more problems realized at Chalk Point, including a potentially disasterous oil spill in 2000, than I've EVER seen at CCNPP. Tell me of any "disaster" EVER, real or imagined, caused by this plant. You can't because there ARE none. It is one of the most tightly regulated plants and is continually under a microscope by both local officials and the NRC.

I personally see a lot of hysteria being generated because it IS nuclear power and the almost irrational fear it instills in people than an actual problem.

ok...time to pull the retard card out for you.
Your line of thinking is so twisted you must have to walk backwards to take a crap.
With proper maintenance/ planning yes i would trust any piece of machinery...nuclear or not.
You do realize that similar machines...are used everyday....to protect your freedom?
i'll provide a short list...
Aircraft carriers...(google the uss. theodore roosevelt for when it was built) it's still in service today
F-14 tomcat...still flying (google it's age)

i'm not here to spout about nuclear energy....but do yourself a favor and "know what the he11 your talking about" before you try to start a debate

This is one of the safest and efficient large output energy producers on the planet today. Way better then the coal and oil fired power plants.
Do I want them to build a third reacter? Sure, why not? They are probably the most regulated and watched industry in the world. I live just miles from the plant and it doesn't bother me in the least. Sounds like a few of you are just ignorant and fear mongoring.

Watch out JPCjr going to jump on this wagon and want it closed like he wants Pax. closed.:killingme
But we only have 4 more days till election day, then Hoyer will win by his largest margin ever and it will be happy trails to JPC.

Both the plant and the navy base are critical to both counties.

CCNPP worse case casualties well over 43,000 people property damage well over 87 billion a price we can not afford. List of nuclear power plants in America

And by the way what's going on with the so called program to get rid of all the spent fuel instead of haveing to stage it on site for year after year.
Anouther reason to say No to nuke plants.
