Cooling Fan

I don't know what other towers are like but in mine the fan/heat sink are all one thing and are glued (some type of adhesive) to the processor chip, held down by 4 screws. If your tower is like that and you don't know what you are doing you risk damaging some very expensive parts.

not necessarily "Glued", but that is what happens to the Thermal tape / paste ... it hardens of time ...

I have pulled more than a few CPU's out of the socket trying to remove a CPU Fan ....

Sounds like POS AMD sockets to me... My 755 has a cage that wont let the chip pull out.

Well which fan is she talking about. The processor, the chasis, the video card.....

If the computer wont boot, due to a bad fan, then most likely its a chasis fan thats plugged into the motherboard and monitored by the BIOS.

Not to mention that a cpu fan dosent usually get caked full of dust, since its not sucking in outside air...

I wouldnt be surprised if its a dell.

The two worst fans on cases that are poorly upkept are PSU and CPU from what ive seen. Just work one day at SMARTCO and you will see what I mean.

I'm talking about a "cooling fan" that cool the CPU down. The computer said it is "overheated" and shut down and won't let me boot up.

I can't take the cooling fan off because it have two screwed and the rest is glued down. It is a effing Gateway! Free computer from the state (DORS - Division of Rehabalation (spelling?) Service), so I could attend my classes online and graduate from college. DORS have a contract with Gateway to get cheap and worthless computers.

CPU's cooling fan is caked with dust. :ohwell:

Again, the computer is only four years old and I never took it apart because I'm afraid to mess it up due to that I don't know what I'm doing. I wish they offer classes on "how to take care your computer". If you computer geek wants to teach me on how to maintance my computer and I would APPERCIATE it!

What model Gateway is it? You should be able to take the model number and see what processor it has so you know what fan/heatsink to buy.

Well if its the cooling fan on the heat sink, there are 2 things you can do.

Replace just the fan. At some point you will have to unscrew it from the heat sink...
Or you could purchase a new heat sink and Fan Combo. which isnt expensive at all...

CPU Processor Fans, CPU Cooling Fans, Processor Coolers at TigerDirect.com

The question now becomes, what type of processor you have.???

I doubt she will know any of that, she keeps telling you guys she is not a computer geek. She needs someone to help her. That means someone to physically go to her house and help her. Or have her bring it to you or someone else. I would help her, but I have only ever worked on Dell's and I am by no means a geek in that sort. So someone help her please!!!

You want to be careful not to activate the flux capacitor also.

Update:

I went to Best Buy, Staples, and Radio Shack, they DO NOT have the cooling fan that will fit in the computer. I found someone to fix my computer for me. He said the cooling fan is NO GOOD. However, my computer should be up and running once I get new cooling fan in about a week.

We're looking on TigerDirect.com to order the cooling fan. It is about $50 to order a cooling fan! :faint:

I just built a new box around the intel dx38bt mb, q9450 cpu, 4gb ddr3, 300gb hdd, 8800gts video, 550watt ps, and case for about a grand. Running vista 64 ultimate. Still working the bugs out on the vista, some plugins for firefox don't work properly. If I had to do it again, I'd get a different mobo and go with 8gb of ddr2, xp64. Just too many headaches with this board which won't oc for crap.

Alot of people I know are having their P4 machines break down and when they go to "fix" their machine find out how old their gear really is.
