County Income Tax

My girlfriend and I just moved here. We live in St Mary's county. When I get paid St Mary's income tax is taken out of my paycheck. She was temping and had 2 paychecks and no county tax was removed. She just received her first paycheck as a full time employee and again no county tax was removed. How is it supposed to be? Is it after a certain amount is made or is one of our employers messing up?

Thank you

It's probably figured in with the state tax. I don't have a seperat "county" tax deducted and the state deduction covers it.

I recently started a new job and just got my first paycheck and mine said the same thing. My previous checks from other place never took out for St Marys tax.

Most places the county is included with the state.
:yeahthat: I've only seen a few companies actually break it down separately. It depends on their accounting system and how their withholdings are set-up.

"Local Income Tax

Maryland's 23 counties and Baltimore City levy a local income tax which we collect on the state income tax return as a convenience for local governments.

The local income tax is calculated as a percentage of your taxable income. Local officials set the rates, which range between 1.25 percent and 3.20 percent for tax year 2006.
You should report your local income tax amount on line 31 of long Form 502 or line 9 of short Form 503."

Don't worry you'll see it when it comes time to file your state taxes! Many have referred to it as a "piggy-back tax"

:yeahthat: When you do MD taxes this year, there will be a line where you are asked to figure out what your county tax was. It's just your employer has it it set up to break out each line item - which isn't a bad thing.

Ya I found that too. Now that I know that it can be done either way everything is fine.
Thanks
