Cozumel excursions?

Heading to Cozumel in January.

Anything we should do, besides drink?

Don't leave the beaten path or "Tourist Central".. things go down hill fairly quickly once you leave the safety of the Main Roads.

We went there on a cruise and didn't spend much time there, but when we saw the first armored car (a tactical vehicle NOT a limo) with advertising on it for "rented private security" and "Stay safe during your visit!" figured this probably wasn't a good place to get lost. Followed shortly thereafter by a larger Army Truck full of armed soldiers patrolling the streets..

Beautiful beaches and shopping area, but no way would I wander far from there.

So the thing to do is not go there?

We've had two stops in Cozumel on cruises. First time, we got off and went into the city, had lunch, did some shopping and boarded ship again. 2nd time, we stayed on the ship. When we went to Cancun a few years ago, we mistakenly got on a ferry and wound up in Cozumel again...it was just a dirty and nasty as the first time. The beaches may be beautiful, never went there. Honestly, if it isn't too late to change your plans, Cancun is gorgeous and friendly!!!

I'll be staying on a resort far from San Miguel. I plan to spend most of time relaxing, drinking, eating, and some sports available at the resort. It's too late to change plans as it's paid for.

Did you see any Mayan ruins while you were there?

Cozumel has some of the best scuba diving in the world, if you don't already dive take a resort course while you are there and take a few dives.
There also is a small submarine four that you can go on for a hundred bucks or so.
In my life I have bumped around a lots and lots of resorts / islands all good and bad on a sailboat by myself and with that I really never have had any huge issues with people even I n the poorest of islands.
Mine your own business and you will be fine.
And I will say again, Cozumel has awesome diving.

We did that in Guatemala.. What was interesting in Guatemala the ruins were a mix of ancient tribes.. They believe it was like a TradeZone or a meeting place.

Mayan, Aztec and others I don't remember.

I plan on snorkeling at a minimum. May take a class, but I haven't decided. Thanks. I've heard the diving around Cozumel is great.

Was it cool to see? I think it'd be cool to see something with that much history.

Chichen Itza is kind of far from us (10 hour trip or so there and back), Coba and Tulum are closer, and there's another on the island of Cozumel, but not as large as the others. You can still climb on the Coba ruins, which would be cool and the Tulum ruins are right on the water which is also cool. Just haven't decided yet.

Probably only going to do this one thing, and relax the rest of the time.

The ruins were cool, but I think if we went by ourselves NOT as cool.

This was a Cruise Ship Excursion and our Guide was a DR (PhD) in Ancient Civilizations. He actually talked a lot about the way of life.. translations of the Runes.. and the reason we were wrong about the world ending (apparently).. Sports..

He was under a LOT of stress as we were the LAST cruise ship to come into Guatemala, and with the ships went his source of income for his family.

Remember BUG spray.. like 100% DEET!! The strongest you can find..

We did the Western Carib Cruise and was hoping the Ship would have the classes so we could dive.. They had the Dive Shop still .. but no classes.. and the Dive Shop on the boat was where you went to get and turn in your towels for the pools and hot tubs..

The ports we went to .. Cozumel, Belize.. and a few others I don't recall, the water was CRYSTAL clear. Sitting at anchor or in the port you could look off the back of the ship and watch the fish swimming UNDER the boat.
