Crab pot - deep or shallow?

I was just being silly
Bait door should be secured tightly and placed that side down (bait will be on bottom)
We've had the kids "check" the pots and not put them back in properly (they just tend to throw them back and not place them bair down) and lost a bunch of crabs that way.
How do you know you lost crabs?

We would have like 2 or 3 in there when the kids checked, they'd throw it back in...then the next morning pull them up see they were put in wrong and then there were nada in the pot.
