The diver also found pottery and other artifacts

A scuba diver in Israel discovered a 900-year-old sword off the country's Mediterranean coast that experts say likely belonged to a Crusader knight.

The man, identified as Shlomi Katzin, was on a dive Saturday in northern Israel when he came upon a trove of ancient artifacts including pottery, anchors and the nearly 4-foot-long sword, Israel’s Antiquities Authority said Monday.

The diver took the sword back to the shore – fearing the find could be buried – and gave it to the Israel Antiquities Authority's Northern District Robbery Prevention Unit inspector.

"It was found encrusted with marine organisms, but is apparently made of iron," Nir Distelfeld, an inspector in the authority’s robbery prevention unit, told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "It is exciting to encounter such a personal object, taking you 900 years back in time to a different era, with knights, armor and swords."

The area where the sword was found reportedly provided shelter for ancient ships and is the origin of many archaeological treasures dating back thousands of years.

Yes, Sword Encyclopedia says it likely belonged to a Crusader knight. The sword has a cross engraved on its hilt. It was at the bottom of the sea near Atlit. The nearly 4-foot-long sword was in relatively good condition, despite being encrusted with marine organisms. Miller contacted the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), which dispatched a team of archaeologists to investigate. The authorities are currently investigating the find and determining its precise origins. They believe the sword belonged to a Crusader knight who lost it while fighting off an Arab attack on the town in the 12th century. In the meantime, the sword remains on display for all to see. Thanks to the keen eye of one man, a piece of history have been preserved for future generations. This is an amazing discovery that helps to shed light on an interesting period of history.
